Improvement of the Water Resources Management for a Sustainable Rice-wheat System in BARInd Area :study on Basin and Border Method of Irrigation in Wheat Cultivation-1999

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at Chowbaria, Rajshahi Barind area in boro season to find out suitable method of irrigation for wheat. Wheat was sown in both broadcast and line sowing method. Basin and border irrigation methods were practiced. The plot size of basin and Border was 10 m*16 m and 6 m*36 m, respectively. Kanchan variety of wheat was sown on 13/12/98 and 29/11/98 for basin and border irrigation plots. The row to row distance was 20 cm. The fertilizer rate was 180-140-40-110 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MOP and Gypsum. During each irrigation total volume of water was measured by long throat flume. Rainfall was measured in the experimental site with a raingage. Soil moisture was measured before each irrigation. Three irrigations were applied during growing period for basin and border irrigation. Total water required for basin and border irrigation (both line and broadcast method of sowing) was about 234 mm and 165 mm respectively. Highest grain yield (2780 kg/ha) was obtained in case border irrigation (broadcast sowing) and lowest yield (1944 kg/ha) was obtained in basin irrigation. About 25% water saved in case of border irrigation method as compared with basin irrigation.
