Benchmark Survey of Water Resources, Their Present Utilization and Farmers’ Irrigation and Farming Practice in Rice-wheat System:dtw and Stw Irrigation-1999

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted to assess the present utilization of available water resources during rice and wheat crop seasons, and identify ways for enhancing their utilization and to assess the present level of irrigated rice and wheat production and to determine their cost benefit. The base line survey was conducted during rabi season, 1999 in selected study areas of Chuadanga. The study was in the Chuadanga Sadar thana at Sankarchandra village. Three groups of farmers’ (large, medium, small) were selected. In each group, 5 farmers were considered for interview. In addition, information were generated from the manager of the pump unit which used by the interviewed farmers. Moreover, secondary data were collected from the DAE and BADC sources of the study location. The following features were identified. During 1998 the numbers of DTW were 300 in operation and in the year 1999 the numbers were reduced (231 DTWs). However, the numbers of STWs were rapidly increased from 13424 to 17140. In respect of area increased the total area increased in 1999 compared to 1998 from 33781 to 39435 ha. By the 1992 subsidy on DTW irrigation equipment was fully withdrawn as a result numbers of STW were rapidly increased from year to year. STW can be easily maintained by the small group or individual farmer. During the survey period it was noticed that farmers are interested to use one STW for 3 to 4 bore holes for minimizing the irrigation cost in boro rice and wheat irrigation.
