Population and Reproductive Ecology of Barred Spiny Eel Macrognathus Pancalus and Its Management Recommendations in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Commonly used models were employed to estimate population parameters of barred spiny eel, Macrognathus pancalus, small indigenous species in the river Old Brahmaputra using 333 individuals consisting of 12 monthly samples each collected from April 2008 to March 2009. Male-female ratio did not deviate from parity (X2 test, p = 0.68). Recruitment occurred at standard length (SL) of 7.75 and 8.12 cm and at age about 0.54 and 0.34 years for male and female respectively. The direct fitting of growth equation by ELEFANI model estimated 16.68 cm asymptotic SL for male population and 22.9 cm for female population. Female grew faster than male since growth coefficient was 1.15 for male, and 1.20 for female per year. The asymptotic body weight (BW) for male and female were 25.31 and 76.18 g respectively. Male lived 2.61 years, and female 2.50 years at nost. Growth performance index for male was 2.51 and that female was 2.8. The study determined the spawning season of this species from March to December with a peak in April-May. The minimum SL of a spawning female was 11 cm, and the meal SL at first sexual maturity was 14.8 cm. the species is synchronous iteroperous that a mature female spawned all its eggs concurrently during the spawning season. The analyses of SL-fecundity and BW-fecundity relationships revealed strong relationships between them (R2 = 0.531 and 0.641), and they were statistically significant (P<0.05). the fecundity was 2943 eggs at SL at sexual maturity. The natural and fishing mortalities for male were 1.77 and 2.53 per year, and they were 1.84 and 3.56 per year for female. Male were caught at a rate of 0.59 and females 0.66 per year in the river Old Brahmaputra.

Objectives:

1. Determine age and growth of M. pancalus of a perennial habit; 2. To estimate the size age and timing of recruitment; 3. To determine the timing of spawning and its length, frequency of spawning, size at first reproduction and fecundity of the species; 4. To determine fishing and natural mortality; 5. To assess the sustainable yield; 6. To develop a management guide for the sustainable state of M. pancalus stocks in the various inland habitats in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

1. The determination of fish age and growth ins fundamental in fisheries biology and management. Standard length and body weight of 100 randomly sampled fishes will be measured in each sample. Otolith will be collected from al fish in each monthly sample. Gonad will be extracted from all fish to determine sex ratio, gonadosomatic index, fecundity, spawning season spawning frequency. 2. Sample will produce a time series of length frequency data which may be sufficient to estimate growth by modal progression. 3. A selected subsample including a wide range of individuals of guchi population will be used for the assessment of reproductive condition. Each fish in the subsample is to be sexed and measured and its gonad microscopically assessed. It is worthy to mention that year round monthly samples of M. Pancalus which were already collected to a limited extent in the previous year from the river Old Brahmaputra near BAU campus could be used for this project purposes if necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

The maximum yield per recruit obtained for male was 2.34 g at the fishing mortality of 2.2 per year, and that for female was 4.72 g at the fishing mortality of 1.6 per year. The biomass analyses, however suggested that male attained about 3.59 kg at the age of 11 months while female 8.16 kg at the age of 12 months if 1000 individuals for each sex recruited to the adult stock. A management policy guide to the sustainable perpetuity of M. pancalus fishery in the river Old Brahmaputra was prepared incorporating the output parameters obtained in this research project so far.
