Micro Level Drainage System with Raised Bed in Tidal Affected Area for Creating Upland Environment-1999

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to determine optimum height of the raised bed and depth of the drain, to utilize the tidal water and to develop the land for rice, non-rice and fish culture. About 6000 m² low land was selected at Char Badna farm of BRRI R/S, Barisal to create up land for rice, non-rice cultivation and fish culture for the whole year. Six plots were raised for non-rice and vegetable cultivation. Rice was cultivated in the plot 7, which was low land. Rice was conserve tidal water during dry period. A study was conducted to determine the height of the raised plot, six weekly peak water level of Kirtonkhola river were recorded. Levelling instrument was used to determine the top of the plots and bottom of the ditch drains and canal. Plot level was raise upto 110 cm from the initial plot level. Fifty cm depth was considered for excavation of the canal to conserve water during the dry season. The conserved water was used for irrigation in low land rice and winter vegetables on the raised plots. In the wet season, raised plot crops used the tidal water in the capillary rise action. During the wet season, excess rainwater was drained out from the raised plot to the ditch drains. It was observed that the land was initially inundated from June to October. After raised the plots, land was free from inundation for the whole year and crops was cultivated round the year. Rice was cultivated in the lowland and the ditch drains. Fish was culture in the canal as well as ditch drains.

Cutting material was used to raise plots and it would keep the excavation cost minimum and minimize the wastage of the land. At the same time it was increase the effective surface area of the raised plots. Similarly, the existing pond was excavate upto 2 m depth for fish culture. In the dry season, high tide water level of the Kirtonkhola river was measured to construct the canal of the system. It was found in the dry season, bottom level of the canal and the high tide water level were at the same elevation. Water was conserved in the canal at the time of high tide if the canal would excavate. Fifty cm depth was considered for excavation of the canal to conserve water during the dry season. The conserved water was used for irrigation in low land rice and winter vegetables on the raised plots. In the wet season, raised plot crops was use the tidal water in the capillary rise action. During the wet season, excess rainwater was drained out from the raised plot to the ditch drains.
