Reduction of Methane Emission and Increased Production from Livestock Through Improved Feeding and Manure Management.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Bangladesh 28% of animal population is ruminants and they live on stgraw based diets which is poorly digested and therefore it is likely that ruminal methane production would be higher in these animals since methane production is inversely related with feed digestibility. Another environmental pollutant gas emission related to animals rearing is open pit method of manure management. However, there is a scope to improve digestibility of feeds and management of faces to decrease methane emission and increase animal and crop production. With this view in mind a project was undertaken to increase digestibility of fibrous feeds through strategic supplementation for reduction of enteric methane production improve productivity of cattle as well as to explore appropriate method of manure management for preserving the nutrient content through ammonia and other nitrogenous gas emission. The activities were performed in two complete years. In the first year, participatory rural appraisal (PRA) was conducted with 20 farmers in a village of Muktagacha upazila of Mymensingh district. The objectives were to collect baseline information on the feeding of cattle and the management of cattle manure in rural area. Then the rest of the experiment was conducted on-station in the Shahjalal Animal Nutrition Field Laboratory of the BAU. A feeding trail experiment with growing animals was conducted to investigate the effect feeding improved diet compared to traditional rural farmers feeding system on feed digestibility and growth of animals and on the manure production. In the second year, a feeding system was developed for growing animals for minimizing methane emission, improving digestibility of feeds and hence improving growth of animals. Twelve growing animals were selected and grouped into tow. One group was supplied with traditional feeding of straw based feeds and the other as traditional feeds supplemented with good quality concentrate feeds to increase its digestibility and hence reducing methane emission. Therefore it may be concluded that improved feeding of cattle reduce methane production, increased digestibility and growth of cattle and improved management preserved nutrients in manure.
