Effect of Time and Methods of Planting on Seed Production of Carrot

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at the Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka during the period from October, 1982 to May, 1983 to find out the optimum time and methods of planting for quality seed production in two varieties of carrot (Pusa Kesar and T-29). There were three planting times (17 October, 16 November and 16 December, 1982) and two planting methods (direct sowing and transplanting) in the experiment. In both varieties earlier planting produced higher seed yield than later planting and the direct sown plants resulted in higher seed yield than transplanting.

Objectives:

To explore the possibility of producing carrot seeds
To find out the optimum planting time and methods for seed production of carrot.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur during the period from 17 October, 1982 to 30 May, 1983. The soil of the experimental plot was heavy clay (PH 5.6) and deficient in organic matter. Two varieties were included in this study. The varieties were Pusa Kesar (India) and T-29 ( Pakistan). The six treatments involved three planting dates (17 October, 19 November and 16 December, 1982) and two planting methods (direct sowing and transplanting). Two separate experiments were set up with two varieties in a separate place in order to prevent cross pollination. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of each unit plot was 3.6m X 1.8m. The seeds were sown in unit plots as per scheduled dates with a row spacing of 30 cm. First thinning was done after 15 days of emergence at 2 leaf stage, keeping 4-5 plants/30 cm; second thinning was done 15 days after the Ist thinning at 3-4 leaf stage keeping 2-3 plants/30 cm and the third thinning was dene 20 days after 2nd thinning at 5-6 leaf stage thus keeping one plant/30 cms. In case of transplanting, the roots were dug out, selected and then carrot stecklings were transplanted on 17 January, 17 February and 1 March, 1933 respectively maintaining spacing of 30 cm x 30 cm. Cowdung at the rate of 14 t/ha and fertilizers at the rate of 60 kg N, 35 kg P₂0₅ and 70 kg K₂0 per hectare were applied in the field through urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Full dose of cowdung and triple superphosphate were applied in the field at the time of final land preparation while Urea and muriate of potash were applied as top dressing in three instalments one at 30th day of sowing, the second at 60th day of sowing and the rest dose at the time of flowering (in case of direct Sowing). But in case of transplanting, the third dose of urea and muriate of potash were applied as top dressing after 15 days of transplanting. Intercultural operations such as weeding, mulching, irrigation and spraying of insecticides were done as and when necessary. Support was given with bamboo sticks to keep the plants erect. Seed harvesting started on 25th April and continued upto 30th May, 1983 in case of the variety T-29 while it started on 17th April and continued upto 23rd May, 1983 for Pusa Kesar. Data relating different aspects of seed production viz, days required from sowing to 50% flowering. days required from flowering to maturity, number of inflorescence/ plant, seed yield and duration of picking period for different plantings of both varieties were recorded and analysed for interpretation
