Success of Pear Cuttings as Influenced by Time and Parts of Shoot

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of three times of stem cutting (June, July and August) and three types of cuttings (Tip, middle and basal parts of shoot) on the success of pear cutting was studied. The cutting time and part of shoot used showed significant effect on success of stem cutting. The highest success (69.0% in 1991 and 69.4% in 1992) was obtained from cuttings planted in June while the success was minimum (57.7% and 58.9%) when planted in August. The success of part of shoot used was maximum (68.6% in 1991 and 69.1 % in 1992) in terminal part of the shoot which was statistically similar to those of the middle part (65.3% and 67.2%).

Objectives:

To find out the effect of time of preparing cuttings and parts of shoot used on the success of stem cutting in pear.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during June to December in 1991 and 1992. The treatments consisted of three cutting times viz., first week of June, July and August and three parts of shoots viz., tip, middle and base. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 125cm x 100cm with a spacing of 25cm between the rows and 20cm between the cuttings in a row to accommodate 25 cuttings per plot. Nursery plots were prepared well by spading and mixing sand in the plots. Then the stem cuttings of pear were collected from the existing plants of Raikhali Station, in three different times as mentioned above. The length of shoot was initially 60cm. Each shoot was divided into three parts as tip, mid and base having 20cm length of each cuttings. Data in respect of days to first sprouting, number of branches, leaves, roots and survival percentage of cuttings were recorded five months after making the cuttings and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Interaction between cutting time and parts of shoot was significant on success of cuttings in 1991 but not in 1992. However, June planting cuttings with tip part of shoot produced the highest (72.8 in 1991 and 73.2 in 1992) success of cuttings. But the cutting time August with basal part of shoot gave the lowest (55.0% and 51.8%) success of cuttings. The present investigation indicate that the highest success of cuttings may be obtained from tip part of shoot and June is more suitable time compared to July and August.
