Performance of Some Mango Varieties Produced in Chittagong

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a study with ten relatively small-fruited varieties of mango, namely, Bombai, Bomai Dr. King, Dcori, Kalia, Langra, Lata, Narkeli, Rani Pasand, Sarbati, and Sultan Pasand, produced at RARS, Hathazari, Chittagong, the mean weight of fruits was 151.2g, with proportion of pulp, skin and stone being 68.4, 15.9 and 15.8 percent respectively, and sugar content, 17.2 percent. The heaviest fruits were Kalia (214.8g), Deori and Sultan Pasand; varieties containing highest proportion of pulp were Narikeli (75.9%), Lata (74.8%), Bombai (71.8%) and Sultan Pasand (71.6%), and sugar content were highest in Deori (20.7%), Kalia and Rani Pasand which held topmost position in sweetness and lusciousness.The keeping quality was the best in the case of Lata. In general, the varieties attained their normal qualitative levels, and organoleptically, all except Sultan Pas and and Narkeli, were highly acceptable.

Objectives:

To find out the qualitative performance of elite varieties when grown in the south eastern Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with 10 mango varieties, namely, Bombai, Bombai Dr. King, Deori, Kalia, Langra, Lata, Narkeli, Rani Pasand, Sarbati and Sultan Pasand, which are known to produce fruits small to medium in size. Three mangoes of each of these varieties were collected from the mango plantation of Fruit Section, RARS, Hathazari, Chittagong, during the month of June, 1988 and stored, ripened and studied for their qualitative and quantitative characters including whole weight, proportion of edible portion, skin and stone, sugar content and organoleptic sweetness, lusciousness and fibrelessness. The organoleptic qualities were judged by a panel of four testers.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on finding of the present study, It may be concluded that the general fruit size (whole weight), the edible portions, and the sugar content of the varieties produced at Hathazari, Chittagong attained the normal level and were in no way inferior to those produced in the north-west. In organoleptic sweetness and lusciousness, all the varieties, except Sultan pasand and Narkeli, attained a high level of acceptability, and all the varieties were as fibreless as any standard variety produced in the country.
