Effect of Plant Spacing on the Yield Contributing Characters and Yield of Sweet Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of three spacings ( 60 cm x 30 cm, 45 cm, x 30 cm, and 30 cm, and 30 cm x 30 cm ) on the performance of two cultivars of sweet potato were investigated. Both the cultivars (Banas White and Belalu) gave highest yield per plant at the 60 cm x 30 cm ( 46.45 t/ha ).

Objectives:

To standardize the plant population in growing sweet potato to optimize the yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) at Joydebpur. The soil of the experimental field is grey terrace having clay texture and pH of 6,25. The total N and available P (mg / 100 g) contains of the soil are 0.09 % and 0.10%, respectively. The soil is rich in k. The experimental plot was fertilized at the rate of 10 tons of FYM, 60 kg N, 40 kg P₂O₅ and 90 kg K₂0 per hectare. Two sweet potato cultivars namely. Banas-White an exotic high-yielding cultivar and Belalu a local cultivar were taken for the study. The spacings were 60 cm x 30 cm, 45 cm x 30 cm and 30 cm X 30 cm. The treatments were replicated four times and were arranged in factorial randomized block design with a unit plot size 4.5m x 18m .The sweet potato vines 30 cm in length were planted on 16 November, 1982 and the crop was harvested on 20 April, 1983 after a period of 155 days.

Achievement/Findings:

The exotic cultivar was much superior over the local one in the yield per hectare. Highest yield (36.54 t/ha) was obtained from the widest spacing whereas, the moderate spacing (45 cm X 30 cm) gave the lowest yield (33.37 t/ha). The cultivar Banas- White planted at 60 cm x 30 cm gave the highest yield of roots (46.45 t/ha). Both the cultivars ( Banas White and Belalu ) gave highest yield per plant at the 60 cm x 30 cm ( 46.45 t/ha ).
