Screening of Jute Mutants for Salinity Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during February to May 2007 to screen jute mutants at different level of salinity (NaCl). For germination test, 20 jute genotypes were treated with 8, 6 dS/m salinity and control (0.42 dS/m) where no salt was applied. Among these genotypes, only five were germinated at 6 dS/m salinity level. These were then treated with control, 4 and 6 dS/m salinity levels for studying growth and yield attributes. Plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, dry weight of root, stem, leaves, total dry matter /plant, base diameter, fibre and stick yields were gradually decreased with increasing salinity. The highest plant height was recorded in 0-9897 900 GyP-86(3) and 0-9897 500 Gy P 65(3). The mutant 0-9897 400 Gy P-26(1) produced the maximum number of leaves, dry weight of stem, leaf weight, total dry matter, fibre yield and stick yields. Under the inducing salinity condition 0-9897 400 Gy P-26(1), 0-9897 500 Gy P 65(3) and 0-9897 900 GyP-86(3) performed better than that of other jute mutants with respect to morphological and yield contributing characters.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during February to May 2007 to screen jute mutants at different level of salinity developed by adding NaCl salinity to pot soils following Michael (1978) and Ponnamperuma (1984). For germination test, 20 jute genotypes were treated with 8, 6 dS/m salinity and control (0.42 dS/m) where no salt was applied. Among these genotypes, only five viz. 0-9897 400 Gy P-26 (1), 0-9897 500 Gy P-58(2), 0-9897 500 Gy P-65(3), 0-9897 900 Gy P 72(1) and 0-9897 900 Gy P-86(3) were germinated at 6 dS/m salinity level. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 175 mg urea, 187.5 mg TSP and 250 mg MP per pot. All the fertilizers were applied before sowing except urea which was applied in two equal splits: one half before sowing and another half at 14 days after sowing. These were then treated with control, 4 and 6 dS/m salinity levels for studying growth and yield attributes. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, dry weight of root, stem, leaves, total dry matter /plant at were recorded at 85 days after sowing. Plant height, base diameter, fibre and stick yields were recorded at maturity.
