Effect of Size of Pummelo Seeds on the Germination Ability and Seedling Vigour

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of size of pummelo seeds on the germination ability and seedling vigour was studied. The seeds were grouped into five grades according to length breadth (L/B) ratio, per seed weight and seed volume. Grade 1 and 2 seeds having mean per seed weight 6.0 and 13.0 mg respectively failed altogether to germinate. The percentage of germination of grade 4 and 5 seeds having mean per seed weight 317.0 and 401.0 mg germinated 75 and 87 percent respectively. Six week old seedlings of these group did not differ much with respect to length of roots and stem. However, weight of seedlings raised from grade 5 seeds was higher than that of grade 4 seeds.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of seed size on germination and seedling vigour.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Citrus and Vegetable Seed Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Dhaka. Seeds from 20 fruits of a single plant collected from the local market were extracted. Seed of all the fruits were mixed together and then graded into five different size groups on eye estimation. Finally length-breath ratio was found out by measuring length and breadth of 10 randomly selected seeds from each grade. Weight of these 10 randomly selected seeds was also noted. Volume was calculated by dipping 100 seeds from each grade into a volumetric flask containing water. One hundred seeds were taken from each grade, washed and dried. The seeds were treated with 0.5% benlate and stored in the refrigerator at 4°C for two weeks before sowing. The seeds were sown on 15 October, 1981 in earthen pols. Watering was done as and when felt necessary. Germination was recorded on 7 December. Ten seedlings of each group uprooted on 19 December, 1981. Weight of the plants as well as their stem and root length were noted.
