Studies on the Morphological Characteristics, Yield and Nutritive Value of Seven Varieties of Sweet Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Morphological characteristics, yield and nutritive value of six exotic and one local varieties of sweet potato were studied. The variety AlS-243-2 produced the highest yield (45.7 t/ha) followed by AIS-0122-2 (34.9 t/ha). Small variations in dry matter, total ash and ascorbic acid contests were observed among the varieties. The differences in carotene and protein contents were, however. noticeable, The varieties AIS-272-9, AlS-35-1 and the local 'Lal' contained the highest amount of protein (5.59 %), carotene (3.35 micro g/100g FW) and ascorbic acid (24.97mg/100g FW) respectively.

Objectives:

To study the morphological characters, yield and nutritive value of six exotic and one local varieties of sweet potato.

Methodology:

Seven varieties of sweet potato consisting of six exotic and one local were the planting materials for the study. The exotic varieties were AlS-230, AIS-272-9, AIS-0122-2, AIS-243-2, AIS-35-1 and AlS-35-2 which are the selections of AVRDC. The local variety used in the experiment was local 'Lal'. The exotic varieties were collected from the Mennonite Central Committee, Feni, Noakhali, which were originally brought from AVRDC, Taiwan. The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November, 1979 to April, 1980 and was laid out in a randomized block design with four replications. The size of the individual unit plot was 2.4m × 204m. The vine cuttings 23cm in length were used for planting. The cuttings were planted at a distance of 60cm × 30cm on 17 November, 1979. Manures and fertilizers were applied at the rate of i3.8 tons well decomposed cowdung, 92.2 kg urea, 154.5 kg triple super phosphate, 266.7 kg muriate of potash and 533.3 kg mustard oil cake per hectare. The crop was harvested on 30 April, 1980. Six plants from each unit plot were selected to study the morphological characters, vegetative growth and yield contributing characteristics of sweet potato varieties. Total yield of tubes .per unit plot was recorded at harvest. The methods utilized for the estimation of moisture, dry matter, ash, carotene and protein contents were those of A. O. A. C (1965). while ascorbic acid was determined according to the Indophenol-xylene extraction method. The protein was estimated according to the Kjwldahl method while carotene was separated by column chromatography.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the present experiment reveal that the variety AIS-243-2 produced the highest yield of tubers under the agro-ecological condition of Mymensingh. At the same time the variety contained high amount of carotene and moderate amount of total ash, protein and ascorbic acid. The variety AlS-1243-2 deserves due attention in the future selection of sweet-potato varieties for Bangladesh.
