Selection Criteria of High Yielding and Short Duration Genotypes of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, during November 2013 to May 2004. The twenty one genotypes were used to show variation, heritability, genetic advance and genetic advance in percentage of mean, genetic diversity, character associations and direct and indirect effect of different traits on yield. The PCV values were slightly higher than the respective GCV values for all the characters under study indicating that the characters were less influenced by the environment. Yield/plant had significant positive association with secondary branches/plant, average fruit weight but significant negative association with plant height, number of flower/cluster, days to 50% flowering and days to maturity. Plant height and number of fruits per plant showed high heritability along with high genetic advance were normally more helpful in predicting the genetic gain under selection. Moderate heritability for primary branches per plant indicated favorable influence of environment rather than genotypes. Path analysis revealed that secondary branches per plant, flower per clusters, days to first flowering, days to maturity, fruits per plant, average fruit weight and fruit diameters showed positive direct effects on yield per plant.

Objectives:

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during November 2013 to May 2004 to know the yield potentiality of the genotypes, to assess the genetic variability among the tomato genotypes in respect of different morphological characters, to determine the nature of association, direct and indirect relation between yield and yield contributing characters, to assess the genetic diversity among the tomato genotypes for identifying the genetically divergent parents and to use those in the further improvement of tomato. The seed sowing was carried out on 13 November 2013 in the seedbed. When the seedling become 17 days old; those were transplanted into ploybag. The seedling in the poly bags were transplanted in the main field on 6 December, 2013. Standard agronomic practices were maintained to grow healthy crop. Harvesting continued for about one and half month because fruits of different lines matured progressively at different dates and over long time.Plants were used for recording observation for the following characters such as plant height (cm), number of primary branches per plant, number of secondry branches per plant, Number of flowers per cluster, number of fruits per cluster, days to first flowering, days to 50 percent flowering, days to maturity, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight (g) , fruit length (mm), fruit diameter (mm) and fruit yield per plant.Mean data of the characters were subjected to multivariate analysis. Univariate analysis of the individual character was done for all characters under study using the mean values and was estimated using MSTAT-C computer programme.

Achievement/Findings:

Significant difference among the clusters was observed through multivariate analysis, clusters analysis and canonical variate analysis. Clusters I had the maximum seven and cluster V had the minimum one genotype. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between III and V and the lowest inter-cluster distance was observed between III and IV. The highest and lowest intra-cluster distance was observed in III and V respectively. Genotypes included in cluster II were important for secondary branches per plant; days to first flowering, fruit yield per plant whereas number of flowers per cluster, number of fruits per cluster and number of fruits per plant were remarkable feature for cluster V. Considering this idea and other agronomic performances, the genotypes BD-7748, Local Jessore -3 and Local Kustia - 1, BD-7762, BD-7285 and BARI hybrid-4, BD-7290, BD-9011 and BARI Tomato-3 might be considered better parents for efficient hybridization programme.
