Effect of Age of Seedling and Spacing on the Performance of Cabbage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture Farm, Mymensingh to find out the optimum age of seedling and suitable spacing for transplantation of cabbage to obtain higher yield. Four seedling age groups (21,28,35 and 42 days old) and three spacing's (60 X 30, 60 x 45 cm and 60 X 60 cm) were the experimental treatments. Seedlings aged 28 and 35 days showed identically better yield performance than 21 and 42 days. The yield per plant was highest with the spacing of 60 x 60 cm. But per hectare production was highest with the spacing of 60 X 30 cm. A combined effect of seedling age groups of 28 and 35 days with 60 X 30 cm spacing gave maximum yield of cabbage per hectare.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum age of seedling and suitable spacing for transplantation of cabbage to obtain higher yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture Farm, Mymensingh during the period from October 1987 to March 1988. The soil belongs to the Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain (Non- Calcareous Dark Grey Flood Plain) having silt loam texture, average organic matter content l.9%, carbon 0.6%, nitrogen 0.06%, C/N ratio 21 and pH value ranged from 5.6 to 7.4. The cultivar of cabbage used in this experiment was Atlas 70 and the seeds were procured from BADC. The treatments of the study consisted of four different aged seedlings (21,28,35 and 42 days) and three spacings (60 x 30 cm, 60 x 45 cm and 60 x 60 cm) respectively. Seeds were sown on 20, 28, September and 5, 12 October and were transplanted on 2 November 1987 when the age of seedlings were 42, 35, 28 and 21 days respectively. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications keeping the age of seedling in the main plot and spacing in the sub- plot. The unit plot size was 7.2 x 1.8m and the main plot size was 7.2 x 7.2m. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 10 tons cowdung, 150 kg urea, 100 kg TSP and 150 kg MP per hectare. Usual cultural practices including irrigation were done as and when needed. Harvesting of crop was done in between 19 February and 1 March 1988. Head yield and other yield components were recorded. Results were analysed statistically and the differences between means were adjudged by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results it is revealed that though individual head weight of cabbage increased significantly with the age groups of 28 and 35 days at 60 x 60 cm spacing but per hectare yield was even significantly better with the same seedling age group while transplanted at 60 x 30 cm spacing. The present study indicated that higher cabbage yield may be obtained from the row and plant spacing of 60 x 30 cm by using around one month old seedling for transplantation.
