In order to determine the optimum plant spacing and seed size; potatoes of the sizes 28-35, 35-45 and 45-55 mm were planted with the tuber-to-tuber spacings of 6, 9, 12 and 15 inches in rows placed 24 inches apart. It was found that the higher the seed rate the higher was the yield per acre, the shorter the spacing the higher was the yield, but the smaller the seed-size the higher was the seed- yield ratio and profit in terms of the percentage of cost of production. The highest financial profit in terms of money without any regard to the investment cost was gained by the combined, effects of the seed size of 28-35 mm and the spacings of 9 or 6 inches, but highest profit in terms of percentage of the investment cost was gained by the combined effects of 28-35 mm seed size and ,15-inch spacing followed by spacings of 12, 9 and 6 inches. The seed-size of 45-55 mm was not found to be economic from any point of view.

To determine the optimum plant spacing and seed size on the Production of potato

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute Farm, Joydebpur, Dhaka during the period from November, 1974 to March, 1975. The soil was clay loam belonging to "Red laterite" class having pH value ranging from 5.5 to 6.0. The land was prepared with one tractor ploughing followed by three disc-harrowings and three ladderings. Cowdung was applied at the rate of 100 mans per acre at the time of general preparation of land. Triple super phosphate at the rate of 2 maunds per acre, murate of potash at the rate of 3 maunds per acre, and one-third of the urea of the rate of 3 maunds per acre were applied at a depth of 5 to 6 inches along the furrows and then covered with soil. The remaining 2/3 rds of urea were applied by the sides of ridges in two equal installments, one before each of the two earthing-up. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design. There were two sets of treatments, namely, (1) Three sizes of seeds tubers viz., small ( 38-35 mm), medium (35-45 mm) and big (45-55 mm), and (2) four tuber-to-tuber spacings, viz., 6,9, 12 and 15 inches, in rows placed 2 ft. apart spacing, being considered as the main treatment, was placed in the sub-plots and size of tubers in the main plots. The experiment was replicated 4 times. The size of each sub-plots was l5ft X10ft. The seed tubers were supplied by the Institute for Research on Varieties of Field Crops (IVRO), Holland. The variety was 'Baraka' a yellow skinned potato. About 3-inch deep furrows were made two feet apart. In each unit- plot there were five furrows. Whole seed tubers of desired sizes were planted in the furrows as per spacing on 25th November, 1974. Immediately after planing the soil was ridged 4 to 5 inches high over the rows planted with seed tubers. Earthing up was done on 15th and 16th December, 1974, which was preceded by top-dressing with half of remaining 2/3 rds of urea. Another earthing up proceeded by top-dressing with remaining part of urea was done on 5th and 6th December, 1975. After top-dressing with urea the field was irrigated. Dithane M-45 was sprayed regularly at an interval of a fortnight as precautionary measure against late blight. Harvesting was done on 3rd and 4th March, 1975. The collected data were statistically analysed and the means were tested for significance by "Tuckey's test" method
