A comparison was made between the effects of hilsha fish oil or soybean oil at 5(Yr level for 2 and 4 weeks on serum and liver lipids in experimentally induced hypercholesterolemic rats, After 2 weeks of feeding the fish oil, serum total cholesterol level fell from 235.9 to 97.3 mg/dl (58.79'( decrease). The corresponding fall in the soybean oil fed group was 50.69'(. After 4 weeks. the falls were 67.3 and 5X,89c. respectively, The rail in serum total cholesterol in each diet group was exclusively due to rail in LDL-cholesterol. The per cent fall in serum cholesterol was always higher in Iish oil-red rats than those fed soybean oil diet. Similar trend was observed in the case or liver total lipids and cholesterol. The excretion of fecal cholesterol was always higher in fish oil-feci animals compared to rats fed soybean oil either for 2 or 4 weeks. The results indicated that under the experimental conditions. the hilsha fish oil shows a hypocholestcrolernic effect in hypercholesterolemic rats which was at least equal to. i I' not higher, than that of soybean oiI.

To observe time course effects of feeding hilsha fish oil on serum and Iiver cholesterol levels in experimentally induced hypercholesterolemic rats.

Fish oil and soybean oil: Adult hilsha fish (Hllsa ilisha) of the Padrna variety was purchased fresh frozen from the local market and the oil portions of body was extracted. The oil 16.0 ltr. on weight basis having O.7mg/d, cholesterol was kept under N2 until used in diets. Soybean salad oil of the highest available purity was obtained from USA as gift. Animals diets analytical procedures: Young adult male rats of the Long-Evans strain were used in the study. The composition of the basal diet, experimental diets (similar way of modification of basal diet) analyses of serum and liver parameters. and statistical analysis were carried out according to the procedure described in details elsewhere.

Question may be raised if the decrease in serum cholesterol in the fish-oil fed animals was due to the effect of the fish oil itself or it was due to the fact that serum cholesterol decreased just because cholesterol feeding was stopped. Previously, we found that when cholesterol feeding was stopped and the hypercholesterolemic rats were fed a laboratory chow diet, serum cholesterol fell but the level was sti II higher than those fed either pangas oil or soybean oil. Other also observed that feeding w-3 PUFA with cholesterol diet also decreased serum cholesterol. In the present study, we compared the results between the effect of feeding hilsha oil and soybean oil in experimental hypercholesterolemic rats. We found that hilsha oil was more effective in decreasing serum cholesterol than soybean oil, although the difference in the two diet groups was not significant. Further studies are needed to establish these findings in other animals and in human subjects.
