Effect of Supplementary Feeding on the Growth Performance of Local Chicks Under Village Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The growth performance of chicks under full-fed (T₁) supplemented (T₂) and control (T₃) were not significantly different among the treatments. Carcass quality of the chicks was examined at 12th weeks of age. The male chicks were heavier (P < 0.05) than the female chicks. The eviscerated carcass weight was higher incase of male chicks ( P < 0.05). The meat bone ratio was also higher in male chicks. The experiment revealed that there was no effect of supplementary feeding on the growth of indigenous chicks and the quality of carcass in male chicks was better than female chicks at 12th weeks of age.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of two levels supplementary feeding on growth performance of local chicks.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Mirertek, Gerua and Kalma villages under Savar upazilla of Dhaka district during the period of October to December 1990. The chicks from each village were considered as one treatment. Fifteen broody hen with 8-12 hatching eggs were identified from each village. The day-old chicks from selected hens of Mirertek, Gerua and Kalrna villages were considered as full-fed (Treatment-1), 50 per cent supplemented feed of their requirement (Treatment-2) and control group (Treatment-3), respectively. The chicks hatched under individual hen were considered as one replication. The full-fed and supplemented groups were supplied the ration I and ration 2 which contained 16.57 and 20.39 percent crude protein, respectively. The chicks of full-fed (T₁) and supplemented (T₂) groups were kept under confinement and scavenging system of rearing, respectively at the villages. The control group (T₃) was maintained as usual practices of the village. The feeds were supplied to the chicks during early in the morning and afternoon before putting the chicks in the night shelter. The hatch weight and growth of the individual chicks were recorded at weekly intervals up to 10 weeks of age. The total number of chicks were 85, 93 and 97 under treatment 1. 2 and 3, respectively. The data were analyzed in General Linear Models procedure of SAS Program with test of significance DMRT. At twelve weeks of age, 18 birds were sacrificed to determine the carcass characteristics taking six birds from each treatment of which 3 were male and 3 female. The birds were purchased from the farmers at the evening of the day and were kept at the farmers house for night shelter. The purchased birds were picked up from the farmers house at early in the morning of the next day and were taken to the laboratory for sacrifice. The birds were weighed before sacrificing and slaughtered by cutting at the cervical region. After normal bleeding, the birds were weighed further and amount of blood were determined by subtracting from initial weight. The birds were defeathered by hand picking and feather weight was taken. The internal organs including air sacs, trachea and kidney were removed. The head and neck were separated and feet were removed from the hock joints to get ready to cook carcass. The meat was separated from the bone hy scratching with knife after boiling and the meat bone ratio was determined. The drumstick was separated and weighed. The data were analyzed in the SAS Program ANOVA with test of significance DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

The result revealed that the yield of eviscerated carcass weight in local chicken was lower than the various crosses of broilers. The male chicks had the higher amount of skin and head portions than the female chicks (P <0.05). The difference was also observed in proventriculus and liver portions of the chicks between male and female (P < 0.05). The average meat to bone ratio of local chicken was 2.71 with 2.91 and 2.49 in male and female, respectively. It was found that the local chicken produced higher meat to bone than different crosses of broilers. The reason might be due to the coagulated blood in the meat which was not completely removed during normal slaughtering practices in the rural condition.
