Prof. Dr. Md. Jafar Ullah
Professor
Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka

The study was undertaken to evaluate the allelopathic effect of mikania on different weeds both in kharif and rabi season at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University . Weed species, number and dry weights of all the species varied depending on the growing seasons. Both number and dry matter of all types of weeds increased up to 60 DAS and afterwards those decreased in kharif season, whereas the number and dry matter increased up to the last sampling (130 DAS).  In kharif season, nutsedge, joina and papri dominated whereas, in rabi season anguli was dominating. In kharif season, treatments had significant effect on number and dry matter of above ground, root and total dry matter weight of nutsedges, joina and papri. In most of the cases the n=untreated treatment had the highest number and the lowest dry weight, whereas the 10% mikania application treatment had the lowest number and highest dry weights. Treatments had also significant effect on plant number and dry weights of panilogn, graminaceous weeds, diocot weeds. But the effect was not consistent. In rabi season, a few weeds were seen to grow compared to those of kharif season. Nutsedges, anguli and chapra dominated in the rabi season.

1. To study the effect of mikania allelopathty to different kharif weeds

2. To evaluate the effect of mikania allelopathy to different rabi weeds

The study was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka to to study the effect of mikania allelopathty to different kharif weeds and To evaluate the effect of mikania allelopathy to different rabi weeds during January 2013 to March 2014. Soil from the wheat field in kharif season, whereas that from the T. aman rice field was collected and sun dried so that fresh mikania plant could be added in right proportion by weight. Mikania fresh plants were harvested, chopped to 1-5 cm pieces and mixed with the soil at 6 rates (0,2,4,6,8,10% of 5 cm top soil of the pot by weight based on the study of Ismail and Mah (1993). Earthen pots of 12 inches diameter having slots at the bottom to expedite the drainage of excess water either from rain source or irrigation were collected. Each pots were then filled with 1.5 kg of mikania mixed soil. Pots with 0% mikania had soil without mikania application. Each treatment had twelve pots so that three pots can be used for the dry matter analysis at four different growth stages (30, 45, 60 and 90 days after  setting, DAS) that is each treatment had three replications. Pots along with the soil inside were then burried into the soil up to the edge so as to impose pretension of the field situation around the root zone of the weeds to be grown form the seeds resided in the soil previously collected  from the wheat field. After setting the experiments the pots were watered to assure field capacity. The pots were arranged following completely randomized design.

After germination no weeding, mulching and fertilization were done. Pots were sampled at 30, 45, 60 and 90 days after setting (DAS) in kharif season, whereas at 30, 60, 90 and 130 DAS at rabi season. Each of the plants were isolated form the mixed community of weeds grown in each pots during each sampling. Roots and shoots were the sepearated. Data was collected on the number of weeds per pot, weed height, above ground biomass and root biomass at all the sampling dates. The data was analyzed using MSTAT computer package and the means were compared by LSD at 5% level of significance.

In rabi season, in contrast to the kharif season, the treatments did not have significant effect on individual weeds, but had effects on total number of weeds and weed weights showing increased values with increasing mikania concentrations up to 10%. Both in kharif and rabi seasons, in most of the cases mikania application from 4% to 10% rate did not show significant differences. So, 4% mikania application could be applied to control nutsedge, joina, papri in kharif season, whereas anguli in rabi season.
