Experimental objective was to select the best indigenous peat for use as carrier material of rhizobial biofertilizer and also to assess the rate of rhizohial count at different temperatures. Peat was collected from eight diverse origin and maximal count of chickpea rhizohia survived in 'Gobra peat' (5.2 x 109) after 45 d of storage at laboratory temperature. Whereas Mollahat peat contained minimal viable rhizobia (0.8 x 109). Channa Tungipara, Panchkobania, Haridashpur, Udaipur and NaraiI locations contained 4.6 x 109. 4.1 x 109,4.1 x 109, 3.2 x 109, 3.0 x 109 and 1.2 x 109 number of chickpea rhizohial cells, respectively. A positive correlation was also observed between some peat properties and viable count of bacterial cells. Survival count of chickpea rhizobia in selected "Gobra peat" varied with different temperatures. Highest survival was recorded at room temperature (250C ± 4) after 15 storage. At low (40C ± 1), and room temperature relatively better survival was recorded and at high temperature (370C ± 1) number of chickpea rhizobia declined rapidly. During storage 108 rhizobial cells/g of peat survived upto 85, 65 and 35 d at low, room and high temperatures, respectively.

To select the best indigenous peat for use as carrier material of rhizobial biofertilizer and also to assess the rate of rhizobial count at different temperatures.

Peat samples were collected from the location Tungipara, Charnta, Gobra, Horidashpur, Udaipur, Mollahat, Narail and Panchkohania of Bangladesh. Air dried peats were crushed to find powder using grinding mill and then passed through a 0.16 mm in diameter sieve. Physical and chemical analysis of peats were done with standard methodology. Due to acidic nature all peat samples were neutralized with CaC03 (amount varied with the sources of peat). Two kg of peat was dispensed in a cotton bag and autoclaved at 15 P.S.I for four hours. Then 100 kg of sterilized peat samples were packed aseptically into polythene bags and scaled. Broth cultures of chickpea rhizobia were injected aseptically into the polythene bags and bring the moisture content of the carrier material to 400/(' by weight. The inoculated bags were then incubated in an incubator at 280C for seven days. After incubation period all the bags were kept in the laboratory for 45 days. In another trial. best performed peat packets were then subdivided into three parallel sets. One set was stored in cooled incubator (4oC ± 1). The second set was stored in the laboratory at room temperature (25°C ±4) and the third set was stored in an incubator at 370C ± 1. The viable count of respective rhizobia in the peat inoculant was made at 1, 15.30,60, 90, 120 and 150 days of storage. Counts were determined using the drop plate methods.

Peat collected from eight different locations varied widely in their physical and chemical properties. Maximum (25Wlr) and minimum (104%) water holding capacity of peats was recorded at Gobra and Narail locations, respectively. Maximum pH (6.6) was observed with daipur followed by Mollahat (pl-l 6.0), Chamta (pH 5.7). Haridashpur (pH 5.7) peal. Narail peat had the lowest (pH 4.1). Gobra peat contained maximum organic matter (66.70/1') followed by Haridashpur (61.89.), whereas Udaipur peat had poor organic matter content (36.4%). Highest nitrogen (1.82%) and exchangeable potassium (0.17 meqo/(') was recorded in Haridashpur and Gobra locations, respectively. However, Narail and Charnta contained the lowest nitrogen (0.45!fr-) and exchangeable potassium (0.08 meq%), respectively. On the other hand. Gobra peat contained maximum phosphorous (52.0 ppm). Exchangeable calcium was found to be highest (2.19 meqCfi) in Haridashpur and lowest (0.94 meq%) in NaraiI peat. Carbon nitrogen ratio was found to be highest (36.57) in Gobra followed by Panchkohania, Channa. Mollahat, Haridashpur, Udaipur. Tungipara and Narail. It was clearly observed that survival of chickpea rhizobia in peat carrier progressively increased with lower storage temperature.
