Incorporating GIS and Remote Sensing Techniques to Delineate the Best Places for Freshwater Prawn (machobrachiun Rosenburgii) Culture in Fulbaria, Mymensingh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A GIS modeling was carried out with the objective to map and evaluate the area having potential of prawn farming in Fulbaria Upazilla of Mymensingh district. The study covers an area of about 402 km² . The land evaluation was based on the FAO guidelines. Six categories of parameters were employed to locate areas suitable for prawn farming such as infrastructure, soil quality, market, support services, agricultural by-product as inputs and available sources of water. Hence the data were collected from the available sources and existing databases and prepared for computer analysis using conventional GIS and other software’s. Multi-criteria evaluation process on the parameters produced suitable farming sites for freshwater prawn of all sub-models, each of which is a land parcels with unique characteristics.

Achievement/Findings:

GIS modeling indetified 73, 32, 0, 20, 46, and 4% very suitable land parcels for prawn farming in soil quality, infrastructure, inputs, water resources, support services and market respectively. Moreover, highest percentage of land parcels falls under (47%), moderately suitable category followed by 32% market, 24% infrastructure and inputs, 16%water resources and 0% under soil category. The resultant suitability classes will be used to find out the most suitable areas using multi-criteria evaluation module in IDRISI Andes GIS software.
