Assessment of Nutrient Status of the Soils of Areas Under Tea in Chittagong Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted to assess the nutrient status of the soils in the existing tea areas of Chittagong Circles during the year 1975-76. Soil samples were collected from 20 different sections of 11 tea estates. Physical and important chemical properties of the soils such as mechanical separates, organic carbon, total nitrogen, lime, magnesium, total phosphorus, potash and pH were determined. The information on age, yield, tea, shade vacancy, topography etc. of the sampling sites was also recorded. The poor growth of tea and low yield are mainly attributed due to deficiency of organic matter and associated nitrogen contents of the soils. C-N ratio of the soils appears to be within the reasonable limit. The lime content of the soils appears to be low and less than the lower limit required for good tea soils. Total phosphoric acid content of the soil appears to be satisfactory but available phosphorus is low. Both total and available potash contents of the soils are satisfactory except few cases. 0.0016% of available phosphorus and 0.018% of available potash in the surface soils may be regarded as the minimum standard values for good tea soils of Chittagong Valley Circles.

Objectives:

To assess the nutrient status of the areas under tea in the districts of Chittagong

Methodology:

Sixty soil samples were collected from 20 different sections of 11 tea estates. Soil samples were collected at 0-9", 9"-18" and 18"-36" depths. For comparison, soil samples were also collected from nearby virgin areas. During field survey particulars of individual section such as age of tea, vacancy, yield per acre, spacing of tea and shade, topography, pest and diseases were noted both in the field and from the garden record. All the samples were dried and processed. Physical and important chemical properties of the soils such as mechanical separates, organic carbon, total nitrogen, lime, magnesium, total phosphorus and potash were determined by following the methods as described by piper (1950) and Cambridge pH meter was used for the determination of pH in soil water ratio 1.5. Nitrogen and organic matter contents of the soils on the non-sandy part of soils were calculated on the basis of the reactive part of the soils.

Textures of the soils varied widely from clay loam, silty loam, loam to sandy loam but majority of the soils belonged to clay loam group. The distribution of mineral particles in the soils varied widely from garden to garden and also from section to section even in the same tea estates, irrespective of topography. Thirty per cent of soils are either poor or marginal in respect of nitrogen. In respect of organic matter 40% soils are marginal to poor having 34.4 to 25.8% of organic matter and 60% soils have above 35% organic matter. The C-N ratio of the surface soils ranged from 5.6 to 13.9 and most of the soils have C-N ratio below 10. pH values of majority soils of Chittagong Circles are around 5.0 and are considered suitable for tea. The lime content of the soils is less than the optimum range required for good tea soils. content of the soils varied from 0.06 to 0.35% and most of the soils are well supplied with magnesium. The available phosphorus content of the soils appeared to be low in most soils. Available potash content in soil of different age groups appeared to be satisfactory.
