Distribution of Phosphorus in Some Tea Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in Bilascherra Experimental Farm of BTRI to study the distribution of phosphorus in tea soils during 1972-75. The study revealed that total and available phosphorus content of soils decreased down the profiles in both virgin and cultivated soils. Total phosphorus was higher in virgin soil than in the cultivated soils whereas the available phosphorus was higher in cultivated soils. In general iron oxides increased down the depths irrespective of topography in both virgin and cultivated soils and with increase of iron oxides total and available phosphorus decreased. The study further revealed that there was a correlation between phosphorus and organic matter and it was negatively correlated with calcium oxide.

Objectives:

To study the distribution of phosphorus in some tea soils

Methodology:

Sixteen sets of soil samples, eight each at three depths (0-9", 9"-18", 18"-36") were collected from the existing tea and adjacent virgin areas of different topography. The samples were dried, processed and analysed for mechanical composition, total and available phosphorus, pH, iron oxide, lime and organic matter.
