Studies on the Fractionation of Soil Phosphorus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

It is believed that greater part of the applied phosphate is likely to be fixed by different oxides and hydroxides of iron and aliminium. In order to study the different forms of chemically bound phosphorus the present investigation was undertaken in BTRI during 1975-76. The results showed that total phosphorus, available phosphorus and organic phosphorus contents of the soil decreased downwards irrespective of the virgin and cultivated area. Iron bound phosphorus has been found to increase with depth whereas aluminium bound, calcium bound and other forms of phosphorus did not maintain any definite trend. In majority cases of virgin soil, percentage of lime increased with the increase of depth whereas it was reverse in case of cultivated soils. The free iron oxide was found higher in the lower depth irrespective of cultural history.

Objectives:

To study the different forms of chemically bound phosphorus in tea soils

Methodology:

Fifty-six soil samples from virgin and cultivated area were collected, processed and dried. The soils were being analysed for water soluble phosphorus and iron, aluminium, organic matter, calcium bound phosphorus, lime, free iron oxide, hydrochloric acid, extractable phosphorus and exchangeable phosphorus.

Results indicated that total phosphorus contents of the soil decreased downwards irrespective of the virgin and cultivated area and available phosphorus also maintained more or less the same trend as that of total phosphorus. Water soluble phosphorus was found negligible in all the cases. Iron bound phosphorus has been found to increase with depth whereas aluminium bound phosphorus did not maintain any definite trend. Organic phosphorus has been found to decrease with the increase of depth. Calcium bound and other forms of phosphorus did not maintain any definite trend. Percentage of lime increased with the increase of depth in most of the virgin soils whereas it was reverse in case of cultivated soils. The free iron oxide was found higher in the lower depth irrespective of cultural history.
