Effect of Cattle Manure, Tea Waste and Compost on the Availability of Added Phosphorus in Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to study the comparative efficacy of cattle manure, compost and tea waste on the availability of added phosphorus in laboratory condition at BTRI during 1972-74. Data revealed that the availability of phosphorus is more when cattle manure or tea waste is added with phosphatic fertilizer. The release of available phosphorus was also found higher from cattle manure, tea waste to compost.

Objectives:

To study the comparative efficacy of cattle manure, compost and tea waste on the availability of added phosphorus

Methodology:

The experiment was initiated with eight treatments under three replications. It was conducted in the laboratory with CRD. The treatments were: T1= control, T2= 25 lbs P2O5/ac, T3= 3 tons cattle manure/ac, T4= 25 lbs. P2O5+3 tons cattle manure/ac, T5= 3 tons tea waste/ac, T6= 25 lbs P2O5+3 tons tea waste/ac, T7= 3 tons compost/ac, T8= 25 lbs P2o5+3 tons compost/ac. A soil sample in bulk was collected and processed. It was analysed for pH, organic matter, nitrogen, potash, total and available phosphorus, calcium and magnesium contents. The compost, tea waste and cattle manure were also analysed for available phosphorus. To a known amount of soil, calculated quanties of cattle manure, tea waste, compost and phosphatic fertilizer were added as per schedule of the experiment. The soils were incubated and sampled after 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks. The samples were then analysed for available phosphorus following Troug’s method.

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed that the treatments differences are significant than the control (T1) except T7 (3 tons compost/ac) in 0 week, T3 (3 tons cattle manure/ac) in 2^nd week and T5 (3 tons tea waste/ac) in 4^th week. Amongst the treatments T4 (25 lbs. P2O5+3 tons cattle manure/ac) was found significantly superior to other treatments followed by T6 (25 lbs P2O5+3 tons tea waste/ac). The availability of phosphorus is more when cattle manure or tea waste is added with phosphatic fertilizer. The release of available phosphorus is also higher from cattle manure, tea waste and compost in order.
