Effect of Liming on the Growth of Tea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tea seedlings are grown well in pH values around 5.8 as it has no adverse effect on the seedling characteristics. The growth characteristics are found better at lime content of 0.1 to 0.08%. Since the lime content of some of the old tea areas is lower than the above limit, the present experiment was undertaken to study the effect of liming on the growth of tea in highly acidic soil in BTRI and Baraoorah tea estate during 1972-78. From the results it appears that continuous liming for four years had a depressing effect on the yield of tea.

Objectives:

To study the effect of liming on the growth of tea

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in two locations as Institute farm and Baraoorah tea estate. The plots were old tea section with highly acidic soil. The liming material was calcium oxide. The treatments included in the experiment were, T1= Control, T2= 240 lbs. calcium oxide/ac, T3= 400 lbs. calcium oxide/ac and T4= 640 lbs. calcium oxide/ac. The treatments were replicated five times under a randomized block design. Plucking was done at 7 days interval and the weight of green leaves per plot was measured.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results, it was found that different doses of calcium oxide gave significant yield differences over control in different years. But the mean cumulative results of 4 years showed that continuous liming had a depressing effect on the yield of tea.
