Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in Institute Farm to find out the effect of pH and liming on the growth of shade tree, Albizzia stipulata in 1972. Six different pH values as 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5 were used. Seeds of A. stipulata were sown in polybags. The growth characteristics of the seedlings in respect of shoot & root length, shoot & root diameter and dry weight of the plants were recorded. The study revealed that A. stipulata grows well between pH 5.0 and 6.0 but at pH 6.0 the growth was the best.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of pH and liming on the growth of Albizzia stipulata

Methodology:

The work was undertaken in 1972 at Institute Farm. A soil sample in bulk was collected, dried and processed. The pH value and texture of the bulk sample were determined. The soil was sandy loam having pH value of 5.0. From a predetermined buffer curve the pH values of the sample were either increased or decreased. The pH values of the soil samples were lowered to 4.0 and 4.5 by adding dilute sulphuric acid and increased to 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5 by adding calcium carbonate. Thus there were six treatments having pHs 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5. Twenty pounds of soil was taken in each polythene bag. Seeds of the shade tree were sown in polybags. Each treatment was then replicated three times having six units of polythene bags under each replications. The seedlings were maintained as usual. Periodically, pH values of the soils of individual treatment were determined to check the change of pH values. The growth characteristics of the seedlings in respect of shoot & root length, shoot & root diameter and dry weight of the plants were recorded lifting two seedlings from each replication after 17^th, 21^st, and 27^th weeks of growth.

From the analysis of the data it appeared that there was a difference in the growth of A. stipulata at different pH values of soil. In respect of shoot length of seedlings, it was found significant at p= 0.05 and 0.01% levels and the best growth was found at pH 6.0. The root diameter was found the best at pH 6.0 as compared to its lower and higher pH values and with the increase of the age of the seedling. In respect of shoot diameter pH 6.0 was found significant over control as well as over other treatment except pH 5.5. Optimum root diameter was recorded between pH 5.0 & 6.0 and at pH 6.0 root diameter was found the best. In case of dry weight of the seedlings, the growth response was very poor in very strongly acidic soils followed by slightly acidic soil. However, the maximum weight was recorded at pH 6.0 followed by 5.5. Thus the growth performance of A. stipulata would also found best under strongly to moderately acid soil with pH ranging between 5.0 & 6.0 and at pH 6.0 the growth was the best.
