Studies on the Interacting Effect of Npk on Soil Properties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The importance of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash in regulating the growth of plant is unquestionable. But the relative retaintive capacity of the soil for those constituents vary according to the nature of ions introduced. The present investigation was therefore aimed at to study the fate of added fertilizers either singly or in combinations in the soil and to find out the rate of mineralization of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash. Data revealed that when nitrogenous fertilizer was applied with phosphate and potassic fertilizers the release of nitrate nitrogen is either static or exhausted rapidly but release of ammoniacal nitrogen fluctuates

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out under 3x3 factorial design under laboratory condition in BTRI during the year 1972. Nitrogen was applied @ 0, 40 & 80 lbs/ac from sulphate of ammonia and P & K @ 0, 40 & 80 lbs/ac each from triple super phosphate & muriate of potash. The soil samples were drawn 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 weeks and analysed for ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen.

Achievement/Findings:

It appears from the result that nitrogenous fertilizer when applied singly, the release of ammoniacal nitrogen increases with the increased doses whereas the release of ammoniacal nitrogen increases with the increased doses whereas the release of nitrate nitrogen is the highest upto certain doses and thereafter it falls gradually. When nitrogenous fertilizer was applied with phosphate and potassic fertilizers, nitrate nitrogen release is either static or exhausted rapidly but release of ammoniacal nitrogen fluctuates.
