Effect of Weedicides on Soil Properties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Application of weedicides is a common practice in tea. When weedicides are applied, the weeds are destroyed and subsequently decomposed in situ. In the process these weedicides enter into soil and may affect the soil properties. Therefore, in order to find out the effects of weedicides on soil organic matter, nitrogen and phosphoric acid contents of the soil, the present investigation was undertaken in two locations during 1973-77. Six treatments were used in this experiment and each treatment was replicated thrice. The weedicides were applied twice in a year. The treatment differences were statistically insignificant which indicated that there was no significant change of soil properties due to the application of weedicides.

Methodology:

The treatments were: T₁= Control (unweeded), T₂= Gramoxone 1½ pt./ac, T₃= Gramoxone 1½ pt.+Fernoxone 2 lbs/ac, T₄= Dowpon 5lbs+Fernoxone 2 lbs/ac, T₅= Reglone 3 pt./ac and T₆= Hand weeding. Each treatment was replicated thrice. The weedicides were applied twice in a year. The soil samples were collected twice from the treated and untreated plots, air dried and processed. The samples were analysed for organic carbon, total nitrogen and available phosphorus.

Achievement/Findings:

It appears from the results that there is a slight increase of organic and available phosphorus in weedicide treated plots than that of control and hand weeding plots. In case of nitrogen content in unweeded and hand weeded plots were higher than the weedicides treated plots. But The treatment differences were statistically insignificant which indicated that there was no significant change of soil properties due to the application of weedicides.
