Studies on the Effect of Structural Stability Index and Organic Matter Content of Some Tea Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were made to assess the structural stability index and organic matter content of some tea soils during 1973-78. The study revealed that high yielding soils have higher stability index and organic matter. Stability index of the soil is closely related with the organic matter content. The stability index of the soils of high and medium yielding sections showed an increase of 136% and 84% respectively over soils of poor yielding sections. The increase of organic matter of the soils of high and medium yielding sections was 52% and 34% respectively over soils of poor yielding sections. The overall figures of stability index and organic matter showed an increase of 81% and 32% respectively over those of poor yielding sections.

Objectives:

1. To determine the structural stability index and organic matter content of some typical tea soils

2. To find out the correlation with the yield of tea

Methodology:

A total of 18 soil samples-7 from high yielding, 6 from medium yielding and 5 from poor yielding sections were collected. Samplings were made from the areas having almost identical topography. The sampling areas were categorized as high, medium and poor yielding having more than 1200 lb, between 800 and 1000 lb & less than 800 lb made tea per acre respectively. All the soil samples were air dried, processed and bottled. The method adopted for determination of structural stability index was based upon the principle on the mathematical deduction and the deducted formula which was of the form S=?n – ?b, where S= stability index, ?n= sum of mechanical analysis of silt and clay fractions, ?b= sum of clay and silt dispersed from the soil aggregate into suspension, was used in measuring the stability index. The hydrometer method was used for estimation of soil aggregate as well as mechanical separates. Soil organic matter was determined.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicated that 85.7% soils of high yielding areas have stability index 20 or more; 33.3% of the medium yielding soils have this value more than 20, whilst all the poor yielding soils contain this value less than 14.74; the lowest value being 4.16. It is apparent, therefore, that the high yielding soils have high stability index as compared to medium and poor yielding soils. 85.7% high yielding soils have this value more than 1% or above, 50% of medium yielding soils have organic matter more than 1% whilst only 40.0% poor yielding soils have organic matter more than one. The overall increase of stability index and organic matter of high and medium yielding areas over poor yielding areas are 136, 84 and 52, 34 per cent respectively. It is evident that soil stability index is closely correlated with the organic matter content of the soils i.e. higher the stability index, higher the organic matter content of the soil. This study suggests that in order to keep the soils in good tilth, the stability index of the soil should be maintained by periodic application of organic matter.
