The experiment was conducted at the research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during January to June 2009 to determine the flowering and pod development pattern and effective flowering period for seed production of ground nut varieties. Five ground nut varieties viz. Dhaka-1, BARI Chinabadam-5, BARI Chinabadam-6, BARI Chinabadam-7 and BARI Chinabadam-8 were used. Flowering, pod development pattern and dry matter accumulation patterns were found similar among the varieties except BARI Chinabadam-5. Both vegetative and reproductive development of BARI Chinabadam-5 were found to slow up to 30 days after flowering and thereafter increased rapidly and the variety needed more time to mature (154 days) than the other varieties. Number of plants/m2 was found maximum in BARI Chinabadam-7 and it was at par with other varieties except BARI Chinabadam- 5. Number of mature pods/plant and 100 seed weight were found highest in BARI Chinabadam-7 and its 100-seed weight was also found maximum. Among the varieties, BARI Chinabadam-7 produced highest pod yield (2712 kg/ha) which was statistically identical with that of BARI Chinabadam-6 (2449 kg/ha) and all the varieties showed excellent seed germination ranging from 94 to 98%. The results were that effective flowering period was up to 30 days after flowering in all the varieties except BARI Chinabadam-5 which needed 10 days more and crop maturity period varied with the effective flowering period.

To find out the flowering and pod development pattern and to identify effective flowering period for maximizing seed production in different groundnut varieties.

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during January to June 2009. Five groundnut varieties Dhaka-1, BARI Chinabadam-5, BARI Chinabadam-6, BARI Chinabadam-7 and BARI Chinabadam-8 were used in the experiment. The trial was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications having unit plot size was 5m x 4m. Seeds were treated with Vitavax 200 and sown on 11 January 2009 with 30cm x 15cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied @ 12-32-43-54-2 kg/ha of NPKSB in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and boric acid, respectively. Intercultural operations such as weeding, thinning, mulching, irrigations and pesticide applications were done as per necessity. Flowering started in Dhaka-I, BARI Chinabadam-7 and BARI Chinabadam-8 on 2 March 2009 i.e. 50 days after sowing (DAS) and it was on 5 March 2009 (53 DAS) in BARI Chinabadam-5 and BARI Chinabadam-6. At 50% flowering stage, ten plants having same day of flowering in each plot were selected and tagged for counting open flower every day. Different groundnut varieties were harvested at different dates such as Dhaka-I, BARI Chinabadam-6 and BARI Chinabadam-8 on 31 May (140 DAS), BARI Chinabadam-7 on 3 June (143 DAS) and BARI Chinabadam-5 on 14 June 2009 (154 DAS). Data were collected on number of flowers/plant/day from tagged plant in each plot, dry matter distribution in different plant parts, yield and yield components (number of pods/plant, seed/pod, 100-seed weight) and also seed germination. Collected data were statistically analyzed and means were compared by LSD test.

The present study revealed that after flower initiation, groundnut varieties differed in both vegetative growth and reproductive development. Effective pods were produced from flower initiation to 30 days of flowering for good quality seed production except BARI Chinabadam-5. BARI Chinabadam-7 was found more productive compared to other varieties that might be accounted for by higher number of effective pods/plant and better seed weight.
