Studies on Potassium Fixing Capacity of Tea Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fixation of potassium has a significant importance in plant nutrition and economy of potash fertilizer. The problem of potassium fixation in tea soils of Bangladesh has not been investigated. The present work conducted to find out the extent of fixation of added potassium in some of the typical tea soils. Three surface soil samples each in bulk were collected from Jagcherra tea estate, Bilascherra Experimental Farm and Modhupur tea estate respectively from low flat, high flat and tillah areas. Different quantities of potassium were incubated for different periods of time. It was found that potassium fixing capacity of low flat soil was highest as compared to high flat and tillah soils. It was also found that there was a relationship between clay fraction and the potassium fixation. The fixation of potassium increased with increase of time intervals upto a certain limit and thereafter it decreased. Though fixation was increased with the increase of potassic salt but it was not proportionate with the quantities of potassic salt added. This study suggests that plant would be more benefited with higher dose of this fertilizer.

Objectives:

To find out the extent of fixation of added potassium in tea soils

Methodology:

Three surface soil samples each in bulk were collected from Jagcherra tea estates, Bilashcherra Experimental Farm and Modhupur tea estate respectively from low flat, high flat and tillah areas. The samples were collected from different topography but have the same cultural history. The samples were air dried, ground and screened through a 2 mm sieve. Each category of soil was treated with 25, 50 and 100 mg of K2O/100 gm of soil in triplicate and kept in beakers under laboratory condition for seven weeks. Then the samples were drawn at an interval of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 weeks. A blank experiment without potash was also run for all the soils at different time intervals. The amount of potash fixed was calculated out by subtracting the available potassium obtained. The amount of potassium not extracted was termed as fixed. The percentage fixation of potassium by different categories of soil and total mean fixation under different concentrations were calculated.

Results indicated that potassium fixation of all the soils increased with the increase of time intervals upto a certain limit and there after it fell. Fixation of potassium increased with the increase of the concentration of the added potassium in all the soils but the rate of fixation was not proportionate with the concentration used which might suggest that at higher concentration plants would be more benefited. Fixation of potassium increased with the increase of finer fractions of the soils i.e. higher the clay content of the soil, more is the fixation of potassium. Soils having higher clay fraction, the organic matter has little or no effect in fixation of potassium. The potassium fixing capacity of the different categories of the soils are in order of: low flat>tillah>high flat.
