Studies on the Nitrifying Capacity of Tea Soils in Different Topography

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to examine the nitrifying capacity of tea soils under topographical diversities in Bilascherra Experimental Farm of BTRI during 1974-75. Soils were taken from tillah, high flat and low flat areas and treated with nitrogen @ 80 lb/ac each from sulphate of ammonia and urea. Soil samples were drawn at different days interval and ammoniacal & nitrate nitrogen contents of the soils were determined. The results obtained indicated that ammonification was highest in tillah soil and nitrification in high flat soil. Both ammonification and nitrification rated lowest in low flat soil.

Methodology:

Representative surface soils under the same cultural operation were collected from tillah, high flat and low flat areas Bilascherra Experimental Farm during 1974-75. Known quantities of soil from each category were treated with nitrogen @ 80 lb/ac each from sulphate of ammonia and urea. Soil samples were drawn at zero day and thereafter at 15 days interval upto 120^th day. Ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen contents of the soils were determined. The values of ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen were calculated after deducting the control figures.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results it would appear that the release of ammoniacal nitrogen from sulphate of ammonia in tillah, high flat and low flat was highest between 15-60 days, 0 and 15 days and in between 0 and 60 days respectively. Whilst the release of ammoniacal nitrogen from urea I tillah, high flat and low flat was highest in 0 and 15 days, 15 and 30 days and in between 0 and 30 days respectively. In respect of topography the order of ammonification was tillah land>high flat>low flat. The rate of conversion of nitrate nitrogen was found to be highest in high flat soil and lowest in low flat. Although there was no definite trend of nitrification in different periods of incubation in different types of soils. The low nitrifying capacity of low flat soil might be due to lack of aeration and impeded drainage. To enhance the nitrification process, proper management of drainage and aeration in the low flat should be taken into consideration before application of nitrogenous fertilizer.
