Utilization of Tea Waste as Organic Manure

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

During the processing of tea, large quantity of residual materials are left out which is termed as tea waste. Under excise law tea wastes are to be destroyed. Efforts are being made to utilize the tea waste as manure. As a first step of the tea series, an experiment was carried out to ascertain how far it could be utilized in the availability of applied phosphate and thereby in the phosphate nutrition of tea. From the results it appeared that maximum phosphate was released when 5 tons of tea waste/ac was added to the soil. Availability of phosphorus was maximum when triple superphosphate was added to soil after 4^th week of incubation with tea waste and the quantity of phosphate released maintained decreasing trend with delay in applying phosphate on soil without tea waste which maintained an increasing trend upto 5^th week and thereafter it fell.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in laboratory condition at BTRI during 1973-74. To known quantities of soil, tea waste at the rate of 3 and 5 tons per acre were applied. 30 ppm of phosphorus from triple super phosphate at 0 week and at an interval of one week was applied to the soil. The application was continued upto 8^th week. Available phosphorus content of the soil was determined just after addition of phosphate and one week interval and continued the determination upto 12^th week.

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed that maximum phosphate was released when 5 tons of tea waste per acre was added to the soil followed by 3 tons per acre. The availability of phosphorus was found maximum when triple superphosphate was added to soil after 4^th week of incubation with tea waste. The quantity of phosphate released had maintained a decreasing trend with delay in applying phosphate on soil without tea waste. The quantity of phosphate released had maintained an increasing trend upto 5^th week and thereafter it fell.
