Evaluation of Surgical Treatment of Gid Disease in Goats

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The efficacy of surgical treatment of gid disease and its clinical manifestations in goat was investigated. The results were based on 32 animals affected with gid disease diagnosed from clinical signs mainly skull softening. The surgical technique employed yielded 93.75% success rate. The disease occurred frequently in middle aged, emaciated female Black Bengal goats, particularly in the pregnant doc. All the cysts surgically removed were located in the cerebral hemispheres. Rectal temperature, pulse and respiration rates of the gid affected animals did not undergo significant changes.

Objectives:

To ascertain the affectivity of surgical treatment for gid disease in goats.

Methodology:

A total of 37 Black Bengal goats were used in the present investigation. Of them, 32 were affected with gid and the remaining 5 animals were healthy controls. The animals showing cessation of feeding, circling movement, repeated bleating and skull softening at the horn base were diagnosed as gid disease. No radiological test was done to reach a diagnosis. A thorough clinical and neurological examination was conducted for all the gid cases and the information regarding age, sex, breed and health status were recorded. General behaviour of the animal particularly head press, head carriage, signs of visual impairment were taken into account in diagnosing gid. Rectal temperature, pulse and respiration rates were recorded from all affected and control animals. The diseased animals were sedated with intramuscular injection of diazepam (Seduxanc. Ritchter-Hungry) at the dose rate of 2.0 mg/kg. No general anesthetic was used. But 3-5 ml of a suitable local anesthetic agent (2% Lidocaine hydrochloride) was infiltrated subcutaneously into the operative site. The common surgical site lay to the left or right of the midline. just caudal to the horn bud or just behind the line joining the lateral canthi of the orbits. In this area, there is a minimal amount of muscle and subcutaneous tissue over the frontal bone. A C-shaped incision with its convexity directed cranially was made and the subcutaneous tissues cleared to expose the bone. The overlying bone was scraped with a scalpel and was removed which allowed the brain tissue to protrude. The meninges were incised to expose the cerebral cortex. The brain tissue was gently manipulated using a probe to allow protrusion of the cyst. After removing the cyst, the skin incision was closed by interrupted mattress sutures using nylon thread which was removed usually after 10-12 days. Antibiotic treatment with oxytetracycline was maintained for 3-4 days post-operatively.

Achievement/Findings:

These results are in conformity with the findings of operated 62 cases of sheep and reported a 74% recovery rate in these animals. A relatively higher percentage of success in the present study may be that all animals had superficially located cyst characterized by skull softening. Removal of cysts in these cases is relatively easier and the amount of tissue damage is minimum. No post-operative complication was encountered. In case of deeply located cyst, the prognosis may be grave and surgical treatment may yield low recovery rate. Coenuruses cysts predominantly occurred in the cerebral hacmisphcrcs in the present study and this is commensurate with the findings of earlier investigations. The diagnosis of gid disease was made on the basis of interpretation of clinical signs as the serological tests often prove unreliable. They reponed that response to skin test is inconsistent and specificity is low because of cross reactions with heterologous larval cestode infections. The clinical sign of coenuriasis appeared to be attributed by raised intracranial pressure due to the presence of cysts. These sings. however. disappeared rapidly alter removal of the cyst. The present study indicates that surgery may be an effective method of treatment for gid disease in goat and that the percentage of success is very high. Also the health condition of animal after surgery dramatically improves under intensive husbandry care. However, where an affected male goat has reached its slaughter weight, it should be slaughtered without delay as its carcass
value need not then he seriously affected.
