Study the Adoption Status of Farm Machinery in Some Selected Sites of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to know the adoption status of farm machineries which have been used in the field and their associated problems related to rice cultivation. Data were collected from Thakurgaon, Comilla, Jessore and Rajshahi districts. The findings of the study revealed that STW covered the highest area in Jessore (90%) and the lowest in Rajshahi (13%) in irrigating the rice field. In Rajshahi, Thakurgaon and Jessore, 86,75 and 67% operations for tillage were done by PT/ tractor respectively. Hand weeding was popular in the surveyed area. Only in Comilla and Jessore , mechdnical weeder was found in use. Cart was widely used in Jessore (60%) to carry paddy, while trolley (45%) was popular in Rajshahi. Paddle /open drum thresher was also widely used in Comilla and Jessore for threshing paddy. But hand beating was still popular in Thakurgaon and Rajshahi. Farmers were not familiar with reaper, dryer and winnower units in the surveyed area. In all study locations, there were existence of post harvest activities such as reaping, carrying and threshing on contract basis and costs for those activities varied from Tk.98l0 to Tk.l1205. Lack of information about machines, high cost of machinery, high cost of fuel and absence of combined harvester were the main problems of mechanization.

Objectives:

To find out status of farm machinery use in rice cultivation, and

To identify the associated problems in using the farm machinery at farm level.

Methodology:

Four districts, namely, Comilla, Jessore Rajshahi and Thakurgaon were selected purposely for the study. At least one upazilla from each district was selected purposely considering the intensity of rice cultivation. Similarly, at least 2 villages from each upazilla and 10 farmers from each village were selected randomly. A pre-structured Thakurgaon (4) Comilla (11) Jessore(8) Raishahi(5) questionnaire was used to collect necessary information through interviewing the farmers. Well structured questionnaire are also sent to the all upazilla Agriculture Office of these districts to provide relevant information of farm machinery that are being used in the field for land preparation, irrigation, weeding, threshing, winnowing and drying and data from those upazilla was collected. Collected data were scrutinized and edited and finally analyzed using descriptive statistics.

From the study, it is concluded that STW covered the highest area in Jessore (90%) and, the lowest in Rajshahi (l3%).In Rajshahi 87% area as irrigated by DTW as BMDA has been involved in DTW management. Cost 'of irrigation water in Thakurgaon for STW as higher compared to DTW as subsidy is given for DTW. In Jessore irrigation cost is more or less similar both for DTW and STW since the irrigation is totally privatized. In Rajshahl, Thakurgaon and Jessore, 86%,75% and 67% operation for tillage rwspectively done by PT/ tractor respectively. Cost of land preparation by using PT / tractor is more or less similar in all the study locations. Farmers were not informed enough about rice weeder and the reason was line sowing is essential for weeder use which increases the transplanting cost. Weeding cost is comparatively lower in Thakurgaon because of lower infestation in rice field. Major portion of paddy is carried by shoulder in the study areas. In Jessore cart is widely used (60%) to carry paddy while trolley (45%) is popular in Rajshahi. Comilla and Jessore area paddle / open drum thresher is widely used in threshing paddy. But hand beating is still popular in Thakurgaon and Rajshahi. In all study locations there was existence of post harvest activities such as reaping, carrying and threshing on contract basis and cost for those activities varies from Tk.9810 to Tk.11205. No reaper unit was in the field to reap crop in the surveyed area as farmers of these area are not familiar with mechanical reaping unit besides this, they are habituated with contractual service for reaping, carrying and threshing of their crop. There was no mechanical drying or winnowing unit was reported by the farmers of the reported area. Sun drying and traditional winnowing by kula are commonly used for drying and winnowing of their crop respectively.
