Profitability and Farm Level Sale Pattern of Selected Vegetables in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Profitability and pattern of sale of five vegetables. namely eggplant. pumpkin. tomato. palwal (pointed gourd) and radish were studied. The average net return and benefit-cost ratio of vegetables were estimated at Tk. 31,463.56 per hectare and 2.73 respectively; which were the highest for high priced vegetables and vice versa. In terms of these two criteria. small farmers were found efficient because of their better management practices. Compared with other winter crops. vegetables were reportedly more profitable. Farmers were found to sell 94 per cent of their vegetables of which 61 per cent in their own villages and the remaining in the market. About 90 per cent growers disposed of their produce to bepari and their common mode of transports were rickshaw van and head load. Contrary to the usual belief. the farmers did not receive lowest price at the peak sale period showing that quality is one of the price determinant factor.

Objectives:

(i To examine the resource use and profitability of selected vegetables

(ii) To examine the pattern of vegetables sale by the growers in the selected areas of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Five vegetables viz., eggplant, pumpkin, tomato, palwal and radish which account for more than half of total vegetable (excluding potato) production in Bangladesh were selected for this study. Four primary markets, such as Saya Bazar in Tangail, Pirganj in Rangpur, Baro Bazar in Jessore and Gadihat in Munshiganj were chosen. Fifty three growers who cultivate vegetables mainly for sale from the villages around the aforesaid primary markets were selected. Data were collected with pre-designed interview schedule from the selected growers during 1988-89. Data were analyzed and results were discussed on the pertinent points, such as inputs used; cost of production; returns; disposal pattern; sale system and price fluctuation at different months of the year.

Achievement/Findings:

Compared with other winter crops, vegetables are more profitable in Bangladesh. So, farmers will be benefited if more land can be brought under vegetable cultivation. The study reveals that small farmers were more efficient against other groups of farmers in vegetable production because of their better management practices. That means, there is enough scope and potential to raise the vegetable production in Bangladesh by encouraging the small farmers to cultivate more vegetables in their marginal lands. About two-thirds of the produce were reported to be sold in the village by the farmers in the study area. Co-operative marketing society of the small farmers may be formed which would enable them to sell their product in the market to beparis and they may receive better price for their quality produce. Like other crops, the study showed that prices were, to some extent, related to the market arrival of vegetables. Market arrival of vegetables can be uniformly distributed throughout the season if early and late varieties of each vegetable are, identified and make the seeds available to the farmers. Thus, the average price received by the farmers will be increased significantly.
