Inheritance of Photoperiod Sensitivity in Mungbean (vigna Radiata (l.) Wilczek)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Inheritance of photoperiod sensitivity in mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) was studied from the crosses involving one photo insensitive and three photosensitive parents under natural day length at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture. Flowering on or before 1st September were used as the index of photoperiod-sensitivity of mungbean plants. The crosses revealed a trend of partial dominance for lateness (short day) flowering in three hybrids. The segregation of F₂ population of a cross indicated that single recessive gene was involved in photoperiod sensitivity. However, the F₂segregation of the other two crosses suggested the role of two recessive genes for the control of photoperiod sensitivity. The standard deviation for days to flowering in all the F₂ generations were higher than the parents and F_I generations.

Objectives:

To study the inheritance of photosensitivity in mungbean.

Methodology:

One photoperiod insensitive variety Kanti (P₁) released by BARI and three photosensitive genotypes viz. P₂, P₃ and P_4, belongs to "Sonamung" group were used in this investigation. All the four genotypes were planted in pots in September, 1993 and the photosensitive parents were crossed with Kanti (P₁) to develop F₁ generation. The parents and F₁s were sown in February, 1994 and F₂ segregating genotypes were obtained. The parents, F₁s and F₂s from each of the three crosses were grown at the experimental field of the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture, Salna, Gazipur during May to October, 1995. Line to line spacing was 50 cm and plant to plant was 10 cm Standard agronomic practices were followed to raise a good crop. First flower opening dates of each plants were recorded. The parents P_2, P₃ and P₄ used from "Sonamung" group are confirmed pho- tosensitive in nature under Bangladesh conditions. Whenever the genotypes of the above group plant they produce flower on 1st September i.e. at 12.5 h day length period which may be the critical day length for induction of flower in those group. Considering the above facts the plants flowered at above 12.5 h day length were considered as photoperiod insensitive and those flowered at 12.5 h or below day length conditions were considered as photoperiod sensitive. The Chi-square test was done to determine goodness of fit of the ratio in the F₂ groups. Mean, standard deviation and range for days to flowering and number of plants in parents, F₁s and F₂s for the three crosses during the growing season (May 1 to October, 1995) were also recorded. The climatic conditions like temperature, day length and rainfall during the growing period were recorded. Day length at IPSA, during the growing season increases from May (13.3 hours) to June (13.7 hours) and then gradually decreases from June to October (11.6 hours).

It may be concluded that a single recessive gene or two recessive genes controlled the photoperiod sensitivity in mungbean. However, these gene effects can be used to develop photoperiod insensitive varieties of mungbean.
