Success of contact, side, cleft and whip grafting on Gopalvog, Mohanvog, Langra and Fazlee varieties of mango was studied. Four months old seedlings were used as root stocks. In contact grafting where the root stocks were grown on earthen pots, there were 72% success for Langra and Fazlee and 68 % for Gopalvog and Mohanvog varieties. 52%, 48%, 52% and 48% success were noticed in cases of Gopalvog, Mohanvag, Fazlee and Langra varieties respectively where the root stocks were grown on polythene bags in contact grafting. In side grafting 52%, 48%, 52% and 48% success ware recorded on the above-said varieties respectively, whereas in cleft grafting, 48%,52%, 52% and 48% success were observed. In whip grafting, the percentage of success on the above four varieties were 28%, 24%,20% and 24% respectively.

  Mango

To study the success of contact, Side, cleft and whip grafting on Gopalvog , Mohanvog, Langra and Fazlee varieties of mango.

The experiment was conducted in the Horticultural Farm of the Bangladesh agricultural University, Mymensingh. 500 Mango stones were selected from a local tree of unknown parentage. The seeds were sown in a seed bed for germination. After germination the seedlings were transferred to 6' x 9' earthen pots containing a mixture of well-rotten cowdung and soil. Four months old seedlings were used as root stocks in the grafting operations. Scion woods were selected from vigorous, healthy terminal shoots. All grafting operations were done in the early part of August, 1971.Contract Grafting:Two types of contact grafting were practiced. In one method, the seedlings were kept in the earthen pots and brought near the selected scion-wood and hung by bamboo poles in such a way that both the stock and scion came in contact. In the seedlings were put into polythene bags containing only a lump of soil and cowdung. Each seedling was lifted to a selected scion wood of a permanent tree and tied to the adjacent brach and grafted in exactly the same way as in the previous case.Side grafting: A small cut, about I.1/2 inch length was made on the side of the root-stock, lifting a flap from the stem but leaving it attached at its base. A 4' -long scion shoot was detached from the parent tree and the base of the scion was trimmed to an oblique angle. The scion was then- placed against the side of the root- stock, and the outer cut on the scion was covered by the flap which was left for this purpose on the root-stock, The graft was bound together with nylon strip and was wrapped by a polythene bag.Cleft grafting: The Scion was cut to a blunt wedge about 2 inch long with one side slightly thicker than the other. The stock plant was cut off 9 inch above the ground level by a pruning shear and a 2 inch deep cleft was made by the budding knife in the centre, of the stock. The scion was inserted into the cleft and tied by nylon strip and the union was covered by polythene bag.Whip grafting: The root-stock was uprooted carefully and its top was cut off leaving only 1.1/2 inch long shoot. A second cut on the root-stock was made to form a tongue.
