A Study on the Performance of Some Varieties of Coffee in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eight varieties of coffee, namely, Bourbon Omaralis, Bourbon Satradoris, Catuna Raja, Lobos, Mondo Nova, Palong, Sumatra and Typica, all belonging to Coffea arabica were tried at Dhaka. All the varieties grew, flowered and were fruitful. The main flowering took place in the first week of March. There was a second flowering between 10th and 11th April. The varieties differed very little in respect of the time of flowering. Mondo Nova was the earliest of all to ripen. Typica ripened last of all. Mondo Nova was the topmost producer of coffee having yielded 11.41 lb. of fresh cherry per plant. This was, however, followed closely by Typica which yielded 9.43 lb. of fresh cherry. Others produced much less quantity of cherry, Mondo Nova and Typica were considered worth recommending for growing in Bangladesh. From 100 lb. of fresh cherry 14.63 lb. of clean coffee 013.11 lb. of roasted coffee were obtained.

Objectives:

To get some varieties of coffee from abroad and try to grow here (Bangladesh)

Methodology:

Seeds of eight varieties of coffee, viz., (1) Bourbon Omaralis, (2) Bourbon Satradoris, (3) Catuna Rojo, (4) Lobos, (5) Mondo Nova, (6) Palong, (7) Sumatra and (8) Typica, all belonging to Coffe arabica, were sown on 8th May, 1960 at the Plant Introduction Centre of the Horticulture Division. Seedlings were transplanted on 23rd June, 1961. The plants were spaced 13 ft. between rows and 15 ft. from plant in the row. All the varieties grew, flowered and fruited. The first flowering took place as early as in 1962. During the year 1970 a study was undertaken to judge the plants from the point of view of the stature attained by them as well as the yield of cherries obtained from different varieties. Among those that were available for study there were 7 Typica, 17 Mondo Nova, 11 Palong, 6 Bourbon Omaralis, 13 Sumatra, 2 Lobos, 5 Bourbon Satradoris and 8 Catuna Rojo plants.
