Effects of Nitrogen and Sulphur Application on the Growth and Yield of Onion Cv. Faridpur Bhatti

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out with different levels of nitrogen (0, 60 and 120 kg/ha) and sulphur (0, 12, 24 and 36 kg/ha) on local onion cv. Faridpur Bhatti. Both nitrogen and sulphur significantly increased the yield. However, a combined application of nitrogen and sulphur produced higher yield than nitrogen or sulphur alone. Nitrogen 60 kg/ha together with sulphur 36kg/ha produced maximum yield (10.44 t/ha).

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of different levels of nitrogen and sulphur on the growth and yield of onion cv. Faridpur Bhatti.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Horticulture Farm, Mymensingh during the 1987-88 growing season. The land of the experimental area was medium high and the soil was sandy loam in texture belonging to the Brahmaputra Alluvial Tract. The treatment consisted of three levels of nitrogen (0, 60, and 120, kg/ha) and four levels of sulphur (0, 12, 24 and 36 kg/ha, thereby making twelve treatment combinations in aII. Full dose of sulphur in the form of gypsum was applied three days before planting. Nitrogen was applied in the form of urea in two equal installments. The first installment was applied during final land preparation and the second installment was applied after one month of planting. The crop received triple superphosphate and muriate of potash at the rate of 175 and 150 kilograms per hectare. respectively. Both of the fertilizers were incorporated into the soil at final land preparation. The two factor experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The size of a unit plot was 2 x 2m. Seven weeks old onion cv. Faridpur Bhatti seedlings were transplanted on 30 December, 1987. A 20 x 20cm plant spacing was maintained, thus, there were 200 plants in each unit plot.
