Evaluation of Soils in Ganges-kobadak (g-k) Project Area of Bangladesh with Mathematical Indices of Size and Shape Characteristics of Primary Soil Particles

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

T'he properties of irrigated soils under 'rice-based cropping pattern in G-K project of Bangladesh, which were dominated by silt fraction were studied. Mass flow enhanced the transportation of clay particles and accumulated at the foot, leaving the sandy particles in the upper part of the catena Sediments of the investigated soils were positive skewed to very positive skewed. The crystalline components of the soils of Sara series (Aquic Eutrochrept) and lshurdi series (Aeric Fluvaquentic Haplaquept) were homogeneous. Sediments, of the soils were well sorted. The values of quotient of stratification indicated that all the profiles were stratified. Among all the profiles only Gopalpur (Aerie Fluvaquentic Haplaquept) soils were most strongly stratified. since the trend of the values of quotient of stratification with relation to depth was markedly interrupted in them. The lower plastic limit showed that the studied soils were not highly sensitive to compaction. Uniformity index revealed that all the horizons of two profiles of Ishurdi series had very poor distribution of equal sized particles and were very well graded.

Objectives:

To evaluate the shape and size characteristics of primary soil particles occurring in the, Ganges-Kobadak project area of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The G-K project is a multipurpose project comprehending irrigation, flood control and drainage measures. Three major soil series (Sara Gopalpur and Ishurdi) occurring in the G-K Project area were selected. These soil series were selected because they cover vast, area of the project and are located in the same catena. The above mentioned soil series were studied and soil samples were collected from phase I and adjoining non-irrigated (rainfed) areas of Kushtia unit for comparative study. At each of the selected sites, pits were opened and soil samples were collected from, each of the genetic horizons upto a depth of 120 cm. The samples were put into polythene bags for transportation to the laboratory. Prior to laboratory analysis, the soil samples were dried, ground and screened to pass through 2.0 mm sieve for analysis. After dispersion of the sample, particle size analysis was made by combination of sieving and hydrometer method and textural classes were determined by Marshall's Triangular Coordinate. Organic carbon content was estimated wet oxidation method. Lower plastic limit water content (0LPL) was determined from the data of % silt, % clay and % organic carbon using the formula.

The Sara and Gopalpur series collected from different locations were platykurtic to leptokurtic but only Chorizons were very leptokurtic to extremely, leptokurtic. In the soil of lshurdi series it was mesokurtic to extremely leptokurtic. The mean particle 'diameter and quartile deviation were comparatively higher for the soils of Sara and Gopalpur series than that of Ishurdi Series.
