Polyhouse Microclimate on Production Potential of Bitter Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 2009 to April 2010 to assess the effect of polyhouse and natural climate on growth and yield of bitter gourd in off-season. The experiment was laid out a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that photo synthetically active radiation decreased in polyhouse over outside the polyhouse (open field). Reverse trend was observed in case of air and soil temperature and soil moisture. The air and soil temperature and soil moisture was greater in polyhouse than open field condition during winter. Bitter gourd plants grown under poly house showed higher plant height, branch number, leaf number, flower number and reproductive efficiency over the plants grown in open field which resulted higher number of fruit setting plant^-1 as well as fruit yield. The fruit size was also larger in polyhouse compared to open field condition. The fruit yield of bitter gourd was about 2.5 times higher in polyhouse than open field in which is economically viable for commercial cultivation in off-season.

Objectives:

To assess the microclimatic differences like photo synthetically active radiation, air and soil temperature and soil moisture inside and outside of polyhouse; and to compare growth, yield attributes and yield potentials of bitter gourd grown in polyhouse and open field.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory, Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from 10 December 2009 to 28 April 2010. A hybrid seeds of bitter gourd was used in the present experiment. The experiment was designed to study the effect of polyhouse climate on growth and development of off-season production potential of bitter gourd. The experiment consists of two environment conditions viz., microclimate variation created by polyhouse and open field condition. The experimental field was divided into two blocks. One block was selected for polyhouse treatment and another one was open field treatment (control). In the polyhouse block, the land was divided into three plots and each plot consist two pits and each plot denotes a replication. The open field divided into three plot and each plot consist two pits and each plot denotes a replication. The doses of fertilizers were: cowdung 3000, urea 150, TSP 125 and MP 100 kg ha^-1. Bamboo trailing was made as means of propping, allowing easy creeping and preventing the plant from lodging to ensure maximum yield. The diurnal fluctuation of soil temperature as influenced by different mulches was measured at 5 cm depth in three hours intervals from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. The PAR and air temperature were recorded on 15 January and February, 2010 at open field and polyhouse above the canopy with a portable quantum sensor and Psychrometer at one hour interval from 9.0 AM to 15.0 PM. Recommended cultural practices were followed. Yield and yield contributing parameters were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

In winter season which is the off-season for bitter gourd cultivation, the microclimates like air and soil temperature and soil moisture increased over open field that was congenial environment for bitter gourd growth and development; and the plant growth and yield attributes of bitter gourd were higher in polyhouse than open field which resulted 2.5 times higher fruit yield.
