Soil Resource Development Institute, Khamarbari Dharak, Dhaka-1212, Bangladesh.

A comparison of pH, organic matter and zinc contents of soils in different land types of Bishwanath Upazilla, Sylhet between the year 1999 and 2014 was made. A two-way factorial (2x5x10) experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with ten replications where land types (High land, Medium high land, Medium low land, Low land and Very low land) and time period (1999 and 2014) were considered as factors. The baseline soil chemical information was taken from the same Upazilla Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide published in 1999 following the same protocol. Though a land type wise significant difference was observed for soil pH, organic matter and zinc content yet the difference was not significant between the two time periods, 1999 and 2014, in case of soil pH and organic matter. The maximum value for soil pH was observed in medium high land (pH 4.93) while the minimum value was found in very low land (pH 4.30). The highest soil pH was found in Balagonj series (pH 5.02) in 2014 and the lowest was observed in Terchibari series (pH 4.3) in 1999. The highest organic matter was observed in very low land (3.76%) and the lowest organic matter was observed in high land (1.41%). The highest OM depletion was observed in Ramgar soil from 1999 to 2014 which was almost 58% and the lowest depletion was found in Terchibari soil (1.9%). On the other hand, the highest zinc was found in very low land (3.23 mg kg-1) while the lowest was observed in medium high land (0.95 mg kg-1). Zinc content was increased significantly in 2014 over 1999 which was almost 85%. The rate of increment of Zn in different soil series were 58%, 54%, 35%, 39%, 266% and 115% in Balagonj, Fagu, Goainghat, Pritimpasha, Ramgar and Terchibari soil series, respectively.

  1. To find out the present pH, organic matter and zinc content in different land types and soil series of Bishwanath upazilla
  2. To quantify the changes of these soil parameters over time period 1999 to 2014.

131 soil samples of Bishwanath Upazilla, Sylhet district were collected in the year 2014 with GPS co-ordinations from different land types and chemical analysis were done in central laboratory of SRDI under the updating program of Upazilla Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide. The baseline soil chemical information were taken from the same Upazilla Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide which was published in the year 1999 and a comparative study was made between the soil chemical data of the Upazilla of the year1999 and those generated in 2014. Five land types were identified (High land, Medium high land, Medium low land, Low land and Very low land) and 10 soil samples data were randomly selected from each of the land types which were considered as replication for the study. Similarly the same of chemical information were taken from the same Upazilla Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide published in 1999 from the same land type. The changes of soil pH, organic matter and zinc were studied. The collected soil samples were analyzed using standard methods. Soil pH was determined by Glass Electrode pH meter method at a soil water : ratio of 1:2.5 and organic matter by Walkley-Black, available Zn was extracted by DTPA method (Page et al., 1989) and analyzed by AAS. A two factors factorial (2 x 5 x 10) experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with ten replications where land type and time period were considered as factors. Statisti x 10 software was used to analyze the data. ANOVA and univariate analysis were performed. Means were separated by LSD at 5% level of significance.
