Effects of Tobacco Mosaic Virus and Cucumber Mosaic Virus on the Growth and Yield of Chilli

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effects of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) on the growth and yield of a local Chilli variety (Cv- Balujury) were studied in a pot experiment. Each virus impaired most of the growth parameters measured. Infection with either or both the viruses significantly decreased the green weight of freshly harvested fruit/plant.

Objectives:

To determine the effects of TMV, CMV and TMV+CMV on the growth and yield of Chilli cv. Balujury.

Methodology:

A glasshouse pot experiment with chilli cv. Balujury was conducted during 1978-79 in a randomized block design with four treatments viz., inoculation with TMV, CMV, TMV +CMV and control each replicated fifteen times. The seedlings at 6.8 leaf stage were mechanically inoculated with sap inocula of TMV from tobacco, CMV from sweet gourd and TMV+CMV (1:1 mixture of the two). Visible symptoms were observed and data on various growth and yield contributing character, such as, diameter and height of plants, number of branches, leaves, flowers and fruit were recorded.
