Studies on the Chemical Composition of Normal Vs. Variegated Tea Leaves Affected by Red Rust Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Red rust is an algal disease caused by Cephaleuros parasiticus. When tea plants are affected by red rust, the leaves became variegated (yellow or white) and produce minute spores especially on the stems. In extreme cases, red rust disease causes severe damage to young tea by killing stem tissues in patches. The present investigation was made to find out the effect of red rust disease on the chemical constituents of normal and variegated leaves of clones and seedling tea in BTRI during 1972-1975. The study showed that normal leaves contain more nitrogen and potash whilst affected leaves contain more phosphoric acid, calcium and magnesium. The study suggests that application of nitrogen and potassic fertilizers would reduce the incidence of red rust disease.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of red rust disease on the chemical constituents of the normal and variegated tea leaves

Methodology:

Both normal and variegated tea leaves of BT1, B207/39, TV1 and seedling tea of standard size were collected from the Institute Farm. The samples were oven dried at temperature 60⁰C, powered, processed and preserved in the air tight bottles for chemical analysis. The samples were extracted for phosphoric acid, potash, lime and magnesia in the wet digestion of sulphuric-nitric-perchloric acids. Calcium was determined volumetrically as calcium oxalate and magnesia as magnesium ammonium phosphate gravimetrically. Potassium was determined by cobaltinitrite method volumetrically and phosphorus colorimetrically. Total nitrogen was determined by Kjeldahl method.

Achievement/Findings:

Nitrogen content in normal leaves is higher than variegated tea leaves with red rust spores of clones, seedling tea under investigation. It might be due to the fact that protein synthesis is hampered or enzymic system responsible for protein synthesis is affected or this constituent is utilized by the algal spores for their sustenance or chlorophyll molecules are disturbed. Healthy leaves contain higher amount of potash. Utilization of this constituent by the spores might be maximum. Phosphoric acid, lime and magnesia contents in variegated tea leaves are higher than the normal ones. The maximum accumulation of phosphate in variegated leaves is probably due to the fact that the mobility of this ion is affected. The study suggests that application of nitrogen and potassic fertilizers would reduce the incidence of red rust disease.
