Studies on the Chemical Constituents of Healthy and Diseased Bark of Tea and Ancillary Crops

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Red rust disease produces minute spores especially on the stems but the symptoms is found in leaves. Leaves became variegated (yellow or white). In extreme cases, red rust disease causes severe damage to young tea by killing stem tissues in patches. Red rust spores are produced within the sporangia at the apex of a hypae like vegetative body. The sporangia when mature is detached and spread easily either by wind, rain, or dew to other unaffected area or to the alternate host plants like Bogamedeloa, Albizzia moluccana, A. odoratissima etc. and thereby liberates its spore. This spore can produce new infection rapidly if environmental conditions are favourable. In order to find out the difference in the chemical constituents between healthy and affected bark of tea and Bogamedeloa in BTRI during 1972-1975. The study showed that nitrogen and potash content are lower in diseased bark of tea and Bogamedeloa whilst phosphoric acid, calcium and magnesium content are higher in affected bark. The study suggests that application of nitrogen and potassic fertilizers would reduce the incidence of red rust disease.

Objectives:

To find out the difference in the chemical constituents between healthy and affected bark of tea and Bogamedeloa by red rust disease

Methodology:

Both healthy and diseased bark of tea and Bogamedeloa were collected from the Institute Farm. The samples were oven dried at temperature 60⁰C, powered, processed and preserved in the air tight bottles for chemical analysis. The samples were extracted for phosphoric acid, potash, lime and magnesia in the wet digestion of sulphuric-nitric-perchloric acids following the methods as described by Piper (1952). Calcium was determined volumetrically as calcium oxalate and magnesia as magnesium ammonium phosphate gravimetrically. Potassium was determined by cobaltinitrite method volumetrically and phosphorus colorimetrically. Total nitrogen was determined by Kjeldahl method.

Healthy barks contain higher nitrogen than bark with red rust spores of tea and Bogamedeloa under investigation. It might be due to the fact that protein synthesis is hampered or enzymic system responsible for protein synthesis is affected or this constituent is utilized by the algal spores for their sustenance or chlorophyll molecules containing nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen etc. are disturbed. In respect of potash, healthy tea bark and Bogamedeloa contain higher amount of this constituent. Utilization of this constituent by the spores might be maximum. Phosphoric acid, lime and magnesia contents in bark with red rust spores of tea and Bogamedeloa are higher than the normal ones. The maximum accumulation of phosphate in barks is probably due to the fact that the mobility of this ion is affected. The high contents of lime and magnesia in bark of tea and Bogamedeloa with spores might have some relation with the phosphate content. The study suggests that application of nitrogen and potassic fertilizers would reduce the incidence of red rust disease.
