Defoliation Effect on Nodulation and Nitrogenase Activity in Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field study was made to assess the effect of defoliation on nodulation and nitrogenase activity in mungbean cv. Binamung-6 and Binamung-7. Results showed that nodule production and nitrogenase activity increased with age till pod filling start followed by a decline. Results indicated that nodule production and nitrogenase activity was lower in defoliated plants than control plants. Nitrate reductase activity was negatively associated with nodule production but plant growth was positively correlated with nodule production. The defoliation effect was more pronounced in small canopy plants than large canopy plant.

Objectives:

To assess the influence of defoliation on nodulation and nitrogenase activity in mungbean.

Methodology:

Experiments were performed at the Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh in Kharif-I (February-May) season of 2005. Two mungbean genotypes viz., Binamung-6 (small canopy) and Binamung-7 (large canopy) were used as planting material. The experimental land was sandy loam. A randomized complete block design with three replications was followed. A unit plot size of 3 m X 3 m with plant spacing of 30 cm × 10 cm was used. Seeds were sown in line and two weeks after germination, the plants were thinned to a density of 30 plants/m2. Urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum were used as a source of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur at the rate of 40, 120, 80 and 30 kg ha-1, respectively. To study ontogenetic nodule production (number of nodules, nodule fresh weight) in roots and nitrate reductase activity in leaves, a total of five sampling were made. The first crop sampling was done at 40 days after sowing (DAS) and continued at an interval of 10 days up to 80 DAS i.e. till attaining physiological maturity. Treatments included no defoliation and 50% leaves removal at 30 DAS. The yield contributing characters were recorded at harvest from ten competitive plants of each plot. The seed yield was recorded from five rows of each plot (1.50 m × 3.0 m) and converted into seed weight plant-1 by dividing the plant number. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Nodule production and nitrogenase activity was lower in defoliated plants than control plants. TDM production was greater in non-defoliated plants than defoliation plants. TDM production depends on nodulation and nitrogenase activity. Therefore, pod yield reduction in defoliated plants might be due to less nitrogenese activity with lesser amount of nodule production. So, measure should be taken to protest insect pest attack.
