Evaluation of Inbred Lines Through Line × Tester Method of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Evaluation of inbred lines using line × tester analysis was conducted in maize involving 11 lines and 2 testers at BARI, Gazipur for grain yield and its components to determine the general combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA) effects and heterosis. Parents with good GCA for yield (E21 and BIL51(1), 1000 grain weight (E21 and BIL51(1)), grains/ear (BIL72 and BIL51(1) may be used in hybridization program as donor. Better performing 3 crosses BIL51(1) x BIL28, E21 X BIL95 and E04 X BIL95 were selected as promising.

Objectives:

To determine the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) of crosses for different traits and to explore heterotic hybrid combinations.

Methodology:

Eleven inbred lines (as female parents) and 2 testers (as male parents) were selected and crossed in line × tester fashion to generate 22 cross combinations in rabi 2012-13 at BARI, Gazipur. Seeds of all the parents and their F₁ hybrids were sown Alpha lattice design with 2 replications on November 2013. The unit plot size was 5.0 × 0.75 m. Spacing adopted was 75 cm × 20 cm between rows and hills, respectively. Intercultural operation and fertilizer were applied as recommend dose. Data on days to 50% pollen shedding and silking were recorded on whole plot basis. All the plants in 1 row was considered for plot yield which was later converted to t/ha.Ten randomly selected plants were used for recording observations on plant and ear height and grain yield (t/ha). Data were analysed by statistics software.

Achievement/Findings:

In the analysis of variance for combining ability, the mean squares due to the parents, parents vs. crosses, crosses, lines, testers and lines x testers were found significant for several characters sugessing the presence of genetic variability among the genotypes for those characters.The variances for line were found significant only for days to silking and yield and rest of the characters exhibited non-significant variances. Similarly, variances due to testers were found significant for grains/ear and yield and other traits were showed non-significant variances. The variance due to GCA (line) being higher than the variance due to sca (lines × testers) indicating preponderance of additive gene effects. The proportional contribution of lines to the total variances was much higher than tester in all the traits indicating higher estimates of variances due to general combining ability.None of the parents exhibited significant and negative GCA effects for days to pollen shedding, days to silking, plant height and ear height although some lines showed negative values. In addition to grain yield parent BIL51(1) was also good general combiner for grains/ear.None of the crosses showed significant and positive SCA effect for yield. Five crosses (BIL19 X BIL 28, E04 X BIL 95, BIL51(1)X BIL28, BIL51(1) X BIL95 and E21 X BIL 95) involved average X average, high X average and low X average general combiners but exhibited non significant sca effects but exhibited high mean performance. Three crosses showed significant and negative sca effects for pollen shedding. None of the parents showed significant and negative SCA effects but exhibited significant and negative heterosis for all the crosses. In case of number of grains per ear, two crosses expressed significant and positive SCA effect which involved average X average and high X average general combining parents but showed high mean performance. A positive sca effect is desirable for 1000 grain weight.
