Evaluation of Test Cross Hybrids of Popcorn Through Line × Tester Method

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Evaluation of S₅ lines using line×tester method was conducted at BARI, Joydebpur during rabi 2013-14 in popcorn involving 8 lines and 4 testers for grain yield and popping quality traits to determine the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects. Highly significant genotypic differences were observed indicated wide range of variability present among the genotypes. Parents PCB/S₅-12, PCB/S₅-15, PCB/S₅-17, PCB/S₅-30 and PCB/S₅-39 could be used for obtaining yield as well as popping quality. The crosses with high SCA effect for grain yield evolved from high × low general combiner parents were reveled additive × dominance type of gene action. The cross combinations PCB/S₅- 13×T8, PCB/S₅- 15×Thai, PCB/S₅-16×Thai, PCB/S₅-17×T17, PCB/S₅-25×T2, PCB/S₅-30× 8, PCB/S₅-30×T17 and PCB/S₅-39× Thai possessed high means for quality traits and SCA values might be used for obtaining high yielding quality pop corn hybrids.

Objectives:

To develop popcorn inbreed lines and selection of promising test crosses.

Methodology:

The experimental material comprised of eight S₅ generation of popcorn lines (as female parents) and 4 testers (male parents) with diverse genetic base. The 32 F₁ (8 x 4) cross combinations were recovered through Line x Tester mating design during 2012-13 at BARI, Joydebpur. The 32 F₁’s and 8 parental lines along with four testers were grown in a Alpha lattice design with two replications with spacing of 75 x 20 cm at same farm during rabi 2013-14. One border row was used at each end of the replication for minimize the border effect. Data on days to silking and grain yield were recorded on whole polt basis. All the recommended package of practices was followed. Combining ability analysis was done as by statistical software. After harvesting, shelling and drying seeds were popped and data on popping percentage (% of popped kernel), popping expansion (cm³/g) were recorded and taste of quality (taste, softness and attractiveness) of the popped lines were evaluated by 15 individuals (scientists and staffs) in 1-5 SCAle (1=very good; 2=good; 3=moderate; 4=poor and 5=very poor). Data were analyzed using Crop Stat (Version 7.2) program.

Achievement/Findings:

The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes for all the characters except popping % and test of quality, indicating sufficient genetic variability among the genotypes for these traits. Significant differences were found for lines, testers, crosses, line x testers, cross vs parent and Line v Tester for almost all the traits. Significant differences were observed between the lines for days to silking and yield. Parental lines showed significant difference for days to silking, plant height, popping expansion and test of quality indicate substantial variability prevail among them. The dominance variance was higher than additive variance for all the eight characters. The proportional contribution of lines was much higher than testers in all the traits except plant height and popping percentage.General combining ability (GCA) effects of the parents indicated that line PCB/S₅-25 exhibited significant negative GCA effects for silking, for plant height, line PCB/S₅-12 with highly significant negative effects for evolving shorter plant. Line PCB/S₅-13 expressed highly significant positive GCA effects for yield indicated that this line could be used for exploiting higher yield. None of the line showed significant differences for popping %. Line PCB/S₅-16 and PCB/S₅-30 showed significant positive GCA effect for popping expansion. Line PCB/S₅-12, PCB/S₅-15, PCB/S₅-16, PCB/S₅-17, PCB/S₅-30 and PCB/S₅-39 showed high mean values for poping %, poping expansion and quality and PCB/S₅-13 for yield. Among tester T2, T8 and T17 possessed high mean values for popping expansion and poping % and T17 for yield.Only cross PCB/S₅-15×Thai showed significant positive Specific combining ability (SCA) effect for Popping %. PCB/S₅-13×T8, PCB/S₅-25×T2 and PCB/S5-39×Thai lines showed significant positive SCA effect for popping expansion. In case of grain yield PCB/S₅-13×T17, PCB/S₅-15×T2, PCB/S₅-16×Thai, PCB/S₅-30×T17, PCB/S₅-39×T8 and PCB/S₅-39×Thai exhibited significant positive SCA effects and also had high mean values for grain yield.
