Heterosis and combining ability was studied for days to 50% tasseling, days to 50% silking, plant height, ear height, days to maturity, 1000 kernel weight and kernel yield in a diallel cross involving seven elite maize inbred lines. Variance due to GCA and SCA were highly significant for the characters studied, indicating both additive and non-additive type of gene action were important for controlling the traits. Predominance of additive gene action was observed for all the traits except yield. Parent P2, P5 and P6 were excellent general combiners for earliness and short plant. The parent P4 and P7 exhibited good general combining ability for yield. Estimation of heterosis was carried out using two commercial varieties e.g. BHM 9 & 900 M gold. When standard commercial check 900m Gold was used, among the 21 F1s, four crosses exhibited significant positive heterosis for kernel yield. The highest heterosis 20.22% was exhibited by cross P4×P7 followed by P6×P7 (13.38), P3×P7 (11.12) and P1×P5 (8.23). When we estimated with BHM 9 as check, two crosses exhibited significant positive heterosis for kernel yield. The highest heterosis 14.54 was exhibited by cross  P4×P7 followed by P6×P7(8.23).The crosses showing significant positive SCA values could be used for variety development after verifying them across the agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.

To know the gene action for yield and other important traits in maize inbred lines and to explore heterotic hybrid combination.

Seven diverse maize inbred lines were crossed in a diallel fashion excluding the reciprocals during the rabi season 2012. The resulting 21 F1s and 7 parents were evaluated along with three checks (BARI hybrid maize 9, 900m Gold and NK-40) in an alpha lattice design with three replications at the research farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur in the rabi season of 2013-2014. Each plot comprised 2 rows of 5 m long. Row to row and plant to plant spacing was 75 cm and 20 cm, respectively. Intercultural operation and fertilizer were applied as recommend dose.  Data on days to 50% pollen shedding, silking and days to maturity were recorded on whole plot basis. Combining ability analysis was carried out following Model I Method 2 described by R software. Percent heterosis was calculated by using standard check variety.

The analysis of variance showed that genotypes differed significantly for all the characters. Analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that variance due to General combining ability (GCA)GCA and Specific combining ability (SCA) effects were significant, indicates importance of additive as well as non-additive type of gene action. Parent P4 and P7 were good general combiner for grain yield. Parent P2, P5 and P6 had significant and negative GCA effects for plant height, ear height and days to maturity indicates earliness combined with dwarfness and low ear placement of the line.For days to 50% tasseling, eleven crosses exhibited significant and negetive SCA effects and thirteen crosses showed significant and negative SCA for days to 50% silking, indicates earliness. For days to maturity, four crosses (P1×P6, P1×P7, P2×P5 and P2×P6) showed significant negative SCA and only one cross (P6×P7) showed significant and positive SCA effect. Considering yield, among 21 crosses, 16 crosses exhibited significant and positive SCA effects and most of them also possessed high mean values.  Among these crosses, most of them also showed significant and positive SCA effects for other yield components.Among the 21 F1s, four crosses viz. P1×P5, P3×P7,  P4×P7 and  P6×P7 exhibited significant and positive heterosis for grain yield over 900 M gold.  The highest heterosis 20.22% was shown by the cross P4×P7. Two crosses (P4×P7 and P6×P7) exhibited significant and positive heterosis over BHM 9. The highest heterosis 14.54% was shown by the cross P4×P7.
